I am using the following software to make my back-ups: DVD Shrink 3.1.6 and Nero Express 6.3.0.3. I bought a Sony DRU-530A DVD burner and have just updated to the latest firmware of 2.0a thanks Doom9, I did not know that Sony had a firmware upgrade to double the speed of minus media. My OS is Win-Xp Pro with Service Pack 1 clean install about a week ago. My stand alone DVD player is a Panasonic DVD RV31, it’s about 2 ½ years old and doesn’t have progressive scan. However it was a $200.00 single player when I bought it. I have used two kinds of media for burning both are –R and one brand is Memorex and the other one is off of e-bay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2782739093&category=41795&rd=1 ). I have read just about everything on your website and have found it to be the most useful site out there. I know this media is not the preferred kind that might be the answer to my problem.
The first back-up technique that I tried was using 321 Studios X Copy 1.5. This method worked flawlessly how ever it took a very long time and used 2 blank discs. By a long time I’ll give you an example “Open Range” took almost 5 hours. My computer is not the latest greatest but it does have a 1.5 P4 with 512 ram and a 7200 rpm 80 gig hard drive.
The back-up technique that I am currently using is Main Movie only by Re-author in DVD Shrink. I then remove all other languages except English AC3 and remove all subpictures too. That way I get just the movie in English or as I like to say “From the Lions Roar to the Credits”. My theory here is the less information the less the compression. Also I am not running the deep analysis to try and save time. After I rip the movie onto the hard drive I open Nero and create a DVD Video.
So far everything works great. Both programs complete with no errors and in about 30 minutes. When I take it out to the living room and play it on the stand alone player I’m getting glitches here and there every so often, sometimes I get pauses or ever so slight skips. If I play that same disc on my PC using Win-DVD 4.011.83 the movie plays without any flaws. I have tried the same discs on other DVD stand alone players and they play fine. I went to a site called www.dvdrhelp.com did a check on my Panasonic player and it seems to be one of the worst players for back-ups.
My first question is what makes stand alone players so different? If all they are doing is reading data and transferring it to video and audio that should be an industry set standard. My second question is if you have any ideas of something that I can change? My third question is what brand and model number of a stand alone player would be best to replace my Panasonic?
I waited till the prices of the burners and their media came down till I jumped into this. I was one of those guys back in 1996 that went out and bought a 2x CD burner and spend $600.00 on it and the disc were $8.00 each. Those were some very expensive coasters back then. That’s why I bought the cheap media to learn with. After waiting the 5 day grace period before posting anything really gave me time to research all my questions. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
