Splitting huge mpeg2 file without recompressing?

Here, I have this 7gig mpeg2 file (1h38mins) which is the cleanest thing I have ever seen. I do not remember the bitrate and do not have to have the file here. The movie was encoded and is to be projected for the big screen (not that big tho).

I need to put it on dvd because our movie server crapped on us yesterday. I've done this many times, usually using TMPGenc DVD author because I don't have to recompress or even split the mpeg2 file. All I have to do is select the 1st part of the movie, burn to disc, then do the same for second part of the movie and burn on a 2nd disc. And when the movie is played, I simply switch from disc1 to disc2 using 2 dvd players.

But now, for some reason, TPMCenc DVD author thinks the movie file lasts 53mins only. I've tried a couple other DVD authoring apps and they all see it being 53mins.

The file cannot be played with PowerDVD, WinDVD and most media players. The exception being Elecard MPEG2 player, which can read the entire 1h38mins no problems. But playing a video on a computer projected on screen is very jerky, high quality standalone players is the only way.

TMPGenc can read the file fine it seems, but going from a 7gig to 4gig is losing too much quality, since the max bitrate is 8000. So what I want to do is split the file in 2 and burn 2 dics, but I don't want to recompress the movie at all. The merge/cut tool crashes in TMPGenc so I need something else...

I hope my bad english doesnt make all of this impossible to understand :D

Any input on this would apreciated.

EDIT: Okay... After trying just about every single merge/split/cut tools I could find on dvdrhelp.com, I just noticed there is a "trim" button in Elecard MPEG2 player. I've spent hours looking for something that was right in my face. :rolleyes:

It works, but not very good. It cuts off a couple seconds/minutes at the end even if it is insinde what you have selected to be kept. So credits are cut off. Strangly I trimmed the first half of the movie and could author a dvd with it no problem. But when I trimmed the second part, every app I've tried (besides womble-vcr) cannot open the file. Like it had lost information from cutting the first part of the movie. And when exporting from womble, it as audio syncing issues...

In brief, my problem is not resolved at all.

Try to demux the file to elementary streams and to multiplex it again. Check the separate streams for playability and correct length.

grab womble mpeg-vcr and trim to any frame you like.

Hi Kerfin.

You can also use MPEG2CUT (http://www.digital-digest.net/downloads/files/encode/MPEG2Cut-1.15.rar). It's based on DVD2AVI. Open it. Load Your movie. Select the start and end point usning [ and ]. Click on Save and You have Your two files.

But if PowerDVD and WinDVD can't play Your file, something went wrong. Did You try Media Player Classic for playing it?

The best thing is Demux it with bbDMUX (http://home.mindspring.com/~beyeler/bbtool19.zip) using follow comandlines:

For Video
bbdmux.exe Inputfile.mpg 0xE0 Outputfile.m2v

For Audio 1
bbdmux.exe Inputfile.mpg 0xc0 OutputfileAudio1.m2a

For Audio 2 (If You have)
bbdmux.exe Inputfile.mpg 0xc1 OutputfileAudio2.m2a

You can also use ReJig (www.rejig.org) for this job. Go to filemode and select the stream You want to demux and click on demux.

Then try to remux it with ReJig, IFOEdit or other DVDAuthoring app You like.
