1) do you know what rv9 is? its a codec and therefore a question about it has nothing to do with the container forum - moved

2) i am pretty sure that you didnt use search before starting a new thread like our rules say... so do it and also look at the rv9 faq

EHQ is a better motion estimation. Nothing more.

EHQ is more than better motion estimation, but that's part of it. This is from the oldish RV9-EHQ thread

encoderComplexity sets the EHQ level:
65 = Default : improved efficiency for high action
75 = High : same as 65 + better mode decisions, better representation of high motion
85 = Extra High: same as 75 + best possible mode decisions, very high accuracy motion representation

This better mode decisions are actually more important than the improvement in motion estimation, but fortunately the improvements are nicely additive.

A Google search tells me it might be "Entropy HeadQuarters", which is not a bad idea at all. Or perhaps "Entertainment Headquarters", or "European House of Quality". Seriously, it is much less exciting, just Extra High Quality.

How boring.;)

To get it to the point, EHQ is a RV9/RV10 only thing and not available for RV8, right?
Again, how boring ...:D

EHQ works for RV8 as well. Currently, if you choose 'rv8' as the codec, it uses High complexity as the default, which in this release includes some parts of EHQ, not all, but the best possible mode decision part. So you will get better quality with RV8 now than before :) Specifically, the use for mobile devices was the main motivation for including it.

And this "SEHQ" (semi EHQ) is simply reached by the command line option "-eco high" or just providing no "-eco"-parameter at all? So RealHandy is already SEHQ-ready...
But the better motion estimation won't make it into RV8?

Yes, RealHandy is already using sEHQ.. You can make absolutely sure by adding '-eco high', but that should be default, unless of course you specify medium or low.

I am afraid the better motion estimation will not make it into RV8. Two reasons for this: (1) better and longer motion estimation is not that useful for smaller resolution videos, like for handhelds. The better mode decisions are more important, and (2) it would have taken a lot of time to back-implement those improvements in the older RV8 code base, and with very limited resources, we have to prioritize the latest codec.

OK, so I'll design a "SEQH"-Logo to put it in a suitable place in my GUI... (just kidding, but that doesn't keep me from really doing that  )

I did not really expect that RV8 would be further improved, I was very surprised that SEHQ got into RV8.
Instead, I dreamed of RV9/RV10 on my Nokia 3650, with 208*176px 90° rotated 25FPS DVD-like quality playback ...
OK, I'll stop dreaming. The hardware power won't be enough, I fear.

SEHQ? sEHQ? sEHQ looks more sportive, I think. Hehe.
