View Full Version : Last disc too large
enchant

I've ripped perhaps a dozen DVDs using DVD2SVCD without any problems, but lately, things are going awry. When it splits into two or three final image files, the last is occasionally too large.
For example, a couple nights ago, I ripped Mr. Holland's Opus. The mpeg files sizes were:
bbMPEG_Muxed_File00.mpg: 752 Megs
bbMPEG_Muxed_File01.mpg: 752 Megs
bbMPEG_Muxed_File02.mpg: 894 Megs
This happened a couple weeks ago. I ripped the dvd twice and got two output mpeg files, the last one just over 1 gig. Since dvd2svcd has far too many variables that I don't understand, I simply uninstalled it and re-installed the latest version. Same results. So I assumed that there was something bizarre about that DVD and gave up. Ripped a couple more DVDs ok, then this problem happened again.
I'm lost.
Also, is there any chance that I can re-split this somehow, using the files that are still in my DVD2SVCD\Movie directory?
Thanks for any help.

post your log file please, so we can see your settings.
Check the encoder tab, Do you use VBR or CBR or multipass VBR?
The first one can couse this error.

Wow - quick reply!
I'm afraid I don't see the settings you're talking about. Here's my encoder tab:

the CQ couses your problem, selected in the rate control mode.
1) You can select CBR, your prob will disappear, but quality will be worse.
what else can you select there? I dont know Tmpegenc.
enchant
12th March 2004, 12:33
It seems that the quality selected was correct for three discs. The splitting calculation was incorrect, though. If the data had been split evenly among the three discs, each would have had just over 800 megs.

What is the disc size on the bitrate tab? Should be 700.

Your movie is 143 min long.
So the 5th line is for you. With these settings You should have 3x740Mb images. You dont, becouse using CQ and it mistakes:
See log:
- Encoding Test Clip F:\DVD2SVCD\Movie\AviSynth_Script_file_CQ_TEST.avs

but you have 2398 MB!
That is your problem. Tmpegenc CQ method is not the most accurate.
You have to change that to multipass. Not CBR (becouse of quality), not CQ (size problem) but the 3rd thing in the list on the encoder tab will be suitable for you.

enchant,
you have an option though. Try to resume the process from Multiplexing and splitting, but change the disc size to 800. Probably you should overburn a bit the last disc, but it is better than to start everything from the beginning.
Manngo
12th March 2004, 15:22
Be careful, if you set CD size to 800, your images will be sized to fit on 800 MB/ 90 min CD. It is 100 MB overburn in case of a 700 Mb CD.
Abond
12th March 2004, 15:28
700 MB CD can hold 800 MB Video Data in VCD or SVCD format. Period.
Without any overburn.

Good grief, the more I look at this, the more confused I get.
The disk choices are 740/800? What do these values stand for? The standard cd sizes that I know of are 640/700 megs, or 74/80 min.
I still can't figure out why dvd2svcd is miscalculating the cut points so badly.
Is there a way that I should specify the CD size that I'm using?
Abond
12th March 2004, 15:50
74 min = 740 MB video data
80 min = 800 MB video data
These are burned with Mode 2 Form 2 format which has no CRC - this free space allow you to increase the file size which the discs accept. This concerns VCD, SVCD. Ofcourse if you try to burn regular data (not video or audio) it would be rejected. The avi files are treated as regular data therefore 700 MB CD is 700 MB (which is burned as Mode 1 Form 1 or 2), but there is also a method to make it as Mode 2 Form 2 as you can see here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63047)
It seems to me unneccessary to say that you should read the guide for DVD2SVCD at Doom9.org from which is the citation
First of all: CD size 740 is a regular 74 minute CD and CD size 800 for a 80 minute CD.
This should be pretty straightforward. Between x (minutes) and y (minutes) gives the range of length of the movie in which the number of (the field after mins. use) CDs of size (the field after CD's size). The last field shows the bitrate range you'll get for your movie. As an example let's take line 4: It means: if your movie is between 100 and 125 minutes the movie will be placed onto 2 80 minute CDs and the bitrate you'll get will be between 1605kbit/s (movie length = 125 minutes) and 2042kbit/s (movie length = 100 minutes).
So read it.
BTW, 90 min discs can take 900 MB SVCD...
Manngo
12th March 2004, 16:21
So make it clear:
1.) a CD in SVCD format can contain more data than written on it. difference is about 15%. This means: on a 700 mb (80 min) CD you can burn 805 MB SVCD.
2.) D2S working like this:
on the bitrate tab you set parameters, that according to the movi length, how many and what size CDs should be resulted. The format is length from-to, no of discs, disc size (here is written the normal disc size 640/700 etc., that you can select from the drop-down list).
according to this: Your movie is 143 min. D2S find it in the 5th line becouse it is between 125 and 163 min. So 3CD x 740 Mb will be calculated as a targer size. This is video + audio together. Out of this video data should be 2011715kb, and the rest of space is the audio.
Next step is to create the video file. D2S will start TmpegEnc and give it the necessary parameters. Here are 3 possibilities, depending on the Rate Control Mode selected on the encoder tab:
a.) CBR
encoding will be done Constant BitRate. Size can be calculated exactly this way: (movie length in sec) x (bitrate Kbits/sec) = file size in Kbit
This not support good quality.
b.) CQ
Tmpegenc get the parameters from D2S: the input file and the target size. This case the bitrate is variable from sec to sec so the calculation in the a) pont does not work. It do some tests, and try to encode the movie to fit to the target size. It is a diffilcult thing and there is a mistake always. This can be even 10% or more. (as in your case)
c.) multipass VBR
encodes the movie more times, and creates a result that is target sized, but variable bitrate. So this is the slowest method, but gives a proper size, and goog quality.
After this the resulted video file and audio will be multiplexed and cutted. The first xxx MBytes will be the first cd. xxx depends on what you set on the bitrate tab. the second xxx MB will be the second etc etc.
BUT!!
if the video data is too big (becouse of using CQ method), audio + video together also too big. In this case the last CD will be enlarged.
So now you have a too large file. Solutions:
1.) Restart the project but using multipass VBR (case C above).
OR
2.) As Abond said, on the misc tab resume the project. But after loading the project go to the bitrate tab and at the end of the 5th line change the drop-down box value to 700MB CD. So this will create you about 805 MB images, that can be burn on simple 700 MB/80 min CDs. You have data 2398 MB that means you will have 3 images: 805, 805, 788 MB. This is great solution now.
2.) works now, becouse you had luck. Tmpegenc wanted to make video for 3 x 740 MB CDs, becouse your setting were these. It made a mistake, but luckily the result is exactly 3x 800 MB.
