View Full Version : Does the aspect ratio flag in a video stream actually matter?

I'm curious, because having just used 4:3 automatic pan and scan with Scenarist for the first time (previously only used Maestro) and realised (thanks to a search here) that not only must the stream contain the sequence data but it must also be flagged as 4:3.

So encoding in CCE 2.67 with the panscan box checked but 16:9 selected will output a stream that Scenarist won't recognise as pan and scan. Change the flag to 4:3 using one the many apps available for this and no probs, though.

Now here's the rub - I checked the video stream from a retail DVD with pan and scan (only one I have) and it was flagged as 16:9 (obviously they didn't use Scenarist).

So I'm curious, is the aspect ratio flag in the video stream ignored by all players? i.e. much like timecode values, is it only used for purposes of authoring?

Thanks :)
