This is going from and Xvid avi to Divx 5, basically I joined two seperate avi's and want a smaller file. So I opened it in VirtualDub, set compression to divx 5.1, saved it and went through the whole process. But the finished file was VERY far out of sync, so whats up?

Ok, more to this then. When I load the avi into VirtualDub it tells me the audio was encoded wrong and will be off by something like 4876ms, which is exactly what happens when I compress to dvix. It tells me this needs to be re-encoded to be fixed.
So then what can I use to re-encode the audio?

Use VirtualDubMod instead of VirtualDub and press NO when you'll see that warning.

I had a similar problem with a video clip that had a poorly encoded VBR soundtrack. VirtualDub generated a 2+ second offset. I just followed the advice in the VD warning message -
1. Output the VBR audio to WAV (File >> Save WAV...).
2. Set up the video output with your new compression scheme (DivX in your case).
3. Set up the audio output with Audio >> WAV audio (select the WAV file you wrote in stage 1). Then select Audio >> Compression to recompress the audio. I used Lame ACM Codec (freeware) at 224 bitrate.
That resynched the audio for me with good quality. You can get Lame ACM from...

Good luck

First idea worked just fine, thanks much.
And for the second tip too, havn't run into it yet but given that everything that can go wrong with all these seems to in fact go very wrong i'll keep it in mind!
