Been playing with AutoGK the last few days and was wondering what xvid settings it is using (if any). Are the settings left as default for when any xvid is installed?

I ask because encoding movies at 90% quality mode the old way (ie. manually, and following the snowbeach / koepi guide (http://www.ogsth.com/snowbeach/MPEG-4_XviD_Koepi_24062003-1_Encoder_Guide_ver20030702.pdf)) gives much smaller sizes than encoding at 75% quality mode with AutoGK? I've a few samples running at home now, so I can check when I get home, but is it advised to go playing with these settings in xvid myself or should I leave it alone?

Or am I wasting my time (ie. AutoGK set its own settings every time it runs an encode)?

I tried searching for this but wading through a 78 page thread was just too much ... sorry.

Hi-

You can't really mess with the settings in AutoGK. About all you can do in Quality Mode is to adjust the resolution and percentage. As for the size differences, 2 of the important variables would be resolution and Quantization Type (matrix). If you're using a lower resolution and H.263 (default, I believe, although he pictures MPEG in his Guide) when following snowbeach's Guide, that could account for the differences all by itself.

But without the .avs and XviD settings you use when following the Guide, there's no way to really compare the two methods.

The important AutoGK settings would be LanczosResize, the Custom HVS_Best Matrix, and I forget the resolution; 704*xxx, I think. Oh yeah-the quant settings will also make a big difference for a quality encode. AutoGK is using 2/3 2/3 (I think-I should check that with len0x). If you do yours with the default 2/31 2/31 (as recommended by snowbeach), then the comparison just became apples to oranges.

snowbeach wrote an excellent guide, and it's perfect for beginners. But more experienced users will develop their own settings based on what looks good to them.

K, thanks. Pretty much what I expected, however:

am I wasting my time (ie. AutoGK set its own settings every time it runs an encode)?

and:

Are the settings left as default for when any xvid is installed?

I know AutoGK uses AVIsynth, and other "magic" *cough* analysing before it starts encoding an XViD. But basically what I want to know is if theres any point in changing the settings under "2 pass/first pass" and "2 pass/second pass" manually, or will they just be ignored once AutoGK does its thing?

In fact, I know I've over-complicated what I wanted to ask from the beginning. I just want an answer for the first question above. Does AutoGK set XViD settings when it encodes a movie? Or are they the XViD defaults?

My scenario _was_ very much apples and oranges.

Hi-

And I guess I over-complicated my answer. :) So to get to the point; any settings you have in XviD will be overridden by AutoGK. There's no point in setting anything in there. AutoGK's going to do what it wants.
