mpg file size

I have some divx eps that i want to conver to mpeg to put on a DVD. each divx ep is about 190Mb, i tried to convert one ep, at a bitrate of 2000. which is pretty low, and the final mpg was about 1.2Gb, shouldn't it be closer to the original 190? thanks.

Whats the divx eps bitrate, most probably the bitrate was much lower than 2000kbps and when u convert to mpg using 2000kbps the file size is much large
also the divx file was created with audio in mp3 format with a bitrate of max 128kbps, i guess, u can check it using gspot homepage (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) ,
mpeg is usually created using wav audio at a much higher bitrate

Very surely it should not be closer to the original 190, but be much larger than in the divx format. divx is mpeg-4, which is a much more powerfull compression format than mpeg-2 for the DVD. With respect to the audio, two channel AAC at DVD quality should not be much longer than a corresponding 192 bps mp3.
A bitrate of 2000 indeed is very low and you are probably noticeing it. divx is typically encoded at at most 640 times 480. For DVD, you resize to 740 times 560 (or something), so you already need more bitrate because you are compressing larger images to begin with.

i was using tmpg's dvd template, and that made the file 1.2 Gb. I again tried the SVCD template, with VBR audio, the 55 min of video per disc template to be exact. the file came out to 292Mb, which is much better :) The quality and sound were very acceptable, but the aspect ratio was crazy. it had "widescreen bars" on the sides instead of top and bottom. any ideas what would cause that.

check you settings. you want full screen(keep aspect ratio)
