Can you replace missing ifo files?

I am trying to do a direct disk to disk copy of a dvd but it claims that their are two ifo files missing and it is an incompatible dvd file?

Can these files be replaced?

Are ifo files just simply text files that can be coded manually?

Please help

Thanks in advance.

In theory it should be possible to replace the IFO files. In practice it has proved very hard to do so, partly because they are NOT 'just' plain text, but rather complicated binaries. The most troublesome part is to recreate the menu structure needed to play the DVD. If you are satisfied with a movie only rip then you should be able to extract just the movie and then use IfoEdit to create the IFO for you.

I do assume you actually own the DVD you are trying to backup?

I have a similar question. I'm trying to make a burnable image of a DVD that I ripped (possibly only the movie chain -- not sure) and was subsequently destroyed. All I had were the VOBs and one IFO, which was enough for GKnot to make a DivX, etc. But CloneDVD died when opening the directory, etc.

I downloaded IFOedit and created new IFOs, but CloneDVD is still dying when I try to open the directory, now complaining about missing video files.

I don't care about menus or anything like that, and in fact that may be what is missing since I ripped it with Smartripper long ago intending to make a DivX and then forgot about it until the DVD was damaged. The movie is less than 4GB so I want to just be able to create an image from what I have and burn directly to DVD+RW, preferably with no re-encoding.

PErform a 'Get VTS Sectors' just after creating new ifos and use dvdshrink instead. It might solve your problem.
