I have just recently entered the world of DVD ripping and have been doing quite a bit of research on the topic but I haven't been able to find a solution to my current problem. I have ripped two dvd's with DVDShrink and have had audio-related problems with one. The first one I ripped was fine-no problems. The second however, Castaway with Tom Hanks encountered problems. The video burned fine, but the audio did not come through. I tried playing it in PowerDVD; when I opened up Show Information it said next to the audio "no audio available". However, when I look at the authoring screen in DVDShrink the DTS 5.1 English shows up with a check mark in the box, I cut out all the other audio to aid in the compression. I have searched this forum tirelessly and have found a few pieces of info. related to my problem, but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated-thanks.

Welcome to the forums, maya. :)

Is your system capable of playing DTS streams?
If you're not sure, try playing the original disc selecting the DTS track.

Castaway is one of the few DVD's that the DTS track is the very first audio track. When you process through DVD Shrink you need to remap the audio. If you choose to use the 5.1 Audio track. If you select the DTS only then your dvd player must be capable of decoding DTS Audio.

Ps If you selected the 2nd Audio track and forgot to remap the buttons just simply hit the Audio button of your remote and switch audio.

Thanks to ddlooping and nyplayer for responding so quickley. Some more info. to help you figure out my problem:

1) My system does decode DTS-it will play the movie from the DVD

2) nyplayer-what do you mean by remaping the audio? How do I do this? And I haven't yet burned it to a DVD yet so I don't know if it would have any sound on my dvd player. But as I stated above, it will play on my computer using my dvd burner/rom.

By the way-I have a dell laptop inspiron 3800 (a little old I know). 600Mhz with 512 MB Ram.

maya, have you been playing the VOB files separately?
If yes that might be the reason you're experiencing this problem.
It has been reported by other PowerDVD users.
Try playing the "shrunk" files using PowerDVD equivalent to WinDVD "DVD from folder" (I don't know what the function is called in PowerDVD).

You could also try burning the files to DVD-RW; you will probably find your backup is fine. ;)

It's called "Open DVD file on hard disk drive" in PowerDVD 5.

Thanks again to all-I will try these suggestions when I get home from work, and then let all of you know how it went.

To those of you who had offered some help on my dvdshrink audio problem, there were two main files for the movie-I tried them both and neither of them played sound for me. Any other suggestions? How do I open the shrunk files and play them with powerdvd? Anything else anyone can add. I am going to try and rip another movie and see if the same problem exists. I will try only a small portion however.

maya, have you tried opening the "VIDEO_TS" folder (not file)?

In any case, I suggest you burn to DVD-RW, that way you'll find out if the problem comes from PowerDVD or DVD Shrink. ;)

maya,

In PowerDVD, click on the "select Source" button. (In PowerDVD 5 with the default skin, it's on the bottom right.) Select "Open DVD file on hard disk drive". Navigate to where the the files are, select the VIDEO_TS folder, and click on OK.

ddlooping, thanks for the welcome.
