check out crustys faq (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70658). personally, i recommend the newest 'release canidate' Koepi builds, which is about to be classed as a stable.
just read and use "C17. I'm a newbie. What settings do you recommend?" in that faq, and all your encodes will look marvelous.

The RC's are devapi4 though and as I understand it GKNot doesn't support devapi4 builds which would be why Tuning suggested anything pre 1.0.

testing doesn't hurt, right? you can try out the latest RC on a short sample & see if it works for you. it's that simple. if it doesn't work well, you can downgrade to dev-api-3.

I had to do absoutely nothing to get Gknot to work with XVID RC3. The only thing different is to do a compressibility test, you have to uncheck discard first pass. The other thing is that you have to do your credits seperately because Gknot can't use the zones yet.
Please note that I'm not talking about AutoGK, this is simply GKnot 0.28.7.2

Yes, Hero 2K I too did encoding with GK in XviD 1.0 without any additional efforts. Only incompatibility was that you already mentioned.
However as len0x haven't said GK to support XviD 1.0, errors may happen and might be difficult to find solutions for him. So untill XviD 1.0 is supported, better to use old versions by less experienced people. :)

You can also try DVX (http://www.planetdvb.net/dvx) to encode your videos (more comfortable than Gordion Knot). Even older versions are compatible with XVID 1.0. I am using it since one year.

I wouldn't touch that with a 40' pole! It requires .net! (Sprays keyboard with disinfectant just for typing it.)
Also, where's the CONTOLL! That's the whole point of GK: you have FULL controll over EVERY step of the process.
