Ive already read that... (http://homepages.pathfinder.gr/ffvfw/libavc-options.txt) ;)

Nice, but could someone give me settings for HQ encodes (no matter how slow) ???

I've been using ffvfw for quite some time now and I'm really satisfied by the results. If you don't care about encoding time you could try these options:

Set macroblock decision mode to rate distoration and ME method=EPZS.
Set all ME compare functions to SATD and use diamond=2.
Use 4mv
Check all the chroma boxes in ME page.
Use Trellis quantization. (This will bring speed down really bad but it helps quality a lot)
Use Lumi masking=0.5
Use spatial complexity masking=0.1
Use P block masking=1 !!! (I know it seems crazy but it works fine! :) )
DON'T use darkness masking or temporary complexity masking. They only seem to degrade the encode without any serious gain in size.
If you use the masking settings you can apply a very small quantizer to the credits(=25) and still have them displayed without any major flaws.
DON'T use the alt compression curve.
DON'T use B-frames at all. They are buggy.
I haven't tried qpel at all because I don't like it anyway but you can give it a try if you like. :)
Leave everything else to default (is there anything left? :D)
And that's just about the best you can get with ffvfw IMHO. :)

i think b-frames are working now... at least in the small tests i've done with ffvfw.

there's a new binary floating around (january?) somewhere.

I haven't seen this one. Latest build I have is 20031113. Any links?

Latest FFVFW is integrated in the latest FFDSHOW build.
Cya.

Edit: fixed typos.

Thanks... ;)

Is all thus masking also recommended when I only take care of quality but not filesize ???

Well if you don't care at all about the resulting filesize and you want to do a constant quant encode at q=2 then don't use masking. If on the other hand you want highest quality possible at given filesize then I suggest you use masking. ;)

I can't get ffvfw to show up in virtualdub with only ffdshow installed. So, anyways, if you want the link to january's ffvfw build, here (http://www.ligh.de/software/mirrors.phtml) it is.

It worked just fine here. I'm going to do some tests to see if it works OK. Did you check the VFW box during installation?

edit: fixed stupid typo :)

with an old ffvfw-only build it works
