Greetings,
I've been using dvd2svcd for about a year, having great success, while also learning to respect and adjust for some of its quirks - often with the help of these forums. But lately I've come upon a baffling problem.
Just about every Disney DVD I try to copy generates a "vob read error" at some point in the initial ripping process. This is on my Windows 2000 laptop. Oddly, I can often put the DVD in my much older Windows 98 PC, and the vobs will rip. I hypothesize maybe there's some copy-protect technology at work more geared towards newer computers?
Anyway, now I'm working on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Dvd2svcd generated "vob read error" messages during the rip of vob 2. On a whim, I tried doing all four vobs individually and seperately with the Rip Only option on my laptop - and they all ripped - except for vob 2. I then put the DVD in the PC to try to rip vob 2, and it slowed down and froze at about 75% done.
By the way, the failure occurs whether I use dvd2svcd's internal routines or vstrip.
I suppose it's possible I have a defective DVD, but it does play just fine. And as I say, the vob read failures have only been occurring with Disney products. So maybe they're putting something funky in vob 2 to defeat the rip?
I know there are alternative vob ripper programs out there, so I'd like to know if someone could recommend one that's robust enough to handle tricky DVDs and also fairly easy to learn and use?
And I'd be curious to know what the most common causes of a vob read error message are.
Thanks very much,
Milehigh
