I am new to all this, I am running windows XP. My problem is that frequently when I am trying to convert avi files to mpegs the conversion will go ahead for some time but then my computer will either freeze or reboot, after showing a very quick "blue screen of death" too fast to read. This seems to happen regardless of which conversion orogram I use, and I have tried several, including cucusoft, avs, tmpgenc and fx. Is this a known thing or could it just be specific to my setup. Thanks in advance.

Smells like either faulty hardware (ram sticks for example) or deficient cooling issue to me
Do you overclock your cpu by any chance?

No I haven't overclocked,not sure I'd know how to.:)
My comp. is fairly old, in the scheme of things, I think it's a 1.2 duron and I have 512mb of ram. I have a fairly large fan in the box and the room is reasonably cool. I have this problem even if I leave it to do the job overnight with nothing else running.

I also think it has to do with faulty hardware, particularly since it happens with all encoding programs you try. Encoding is a hardware demanding process and requires stability. A good idea is to run primetest and memtest overnight and see if the problem arises.
BTW, your post does not seem to be related to DVD2SVCD. Remember to choose the right forum in order to get the most helpful advice. Every forum has a sticky list of recommended reading too. Have a pleasant stay.
