Would it be much trouble to change the forum's link colors so that visited links are distinguishable from unvisited links? It makes it much easier to identify threads you're interested in.
The unread/read icons are for that.

You mean the little down arrows to left of the topic title? I don't think I've ever seen those icons work that way.
They're fundamentally different. An "unread" icon would indicate whether there's a new, unread post in a thread. It does not say anything about whether you've read some of the earlier posts in that thread.
Besides, on this board, those icons don't seem to work for me at all (at least, not with Mozilla Firefox) unless I click the "Mark this forum read" link.

WFM (firefox/firebird). unread are yellow. read are gray.

What's yellow and what's gray? Are you talking about http://forum.doom9.org/images/on.gif and http://forum.doom9.org/images/off.gif? or do you mean http://forum.doom9.org/images/firstnew.gif?

Hm, I see http://forum.doom9.org/images/on.gif and http://forum.doom9.org/images/off.gif only next to the forum names, not next to threads.
There's also http://forum.doom9.org/images/posticonnew.gif and http://forum.doom9.org/images/posticon.gif within threads to indicate read and unread posts; those work fine for me, but they won't help me on the forum pages that list the threads.
So do you guys object to having distinct visited links colors? I don't see how they'd hurt, and I can't see how they'd be anything but a good thing.

No one else cares about visited link colors?
Heck, there already are A:hover colors, which are mostly useless. At least visited link colors do something.

for threads, the icons are open / closed envelope, and the colorscheme used is the same as for forums.
as for hover colors.. most websites still use underline for links.. mine doesn't, so the hover color serves as an indication that something can be clicked on. Here in the forum it doesn't seem to work as it should, but I kinda like the effect on the site.

Again, the problem with just the icons are: I manually need to click on "Mark this forum read".
They don't indicate threads that I've visited. They only indicate threads with new posts. How would making distinct visited link colors hurt?

actually.. the icons work just fine for threads.. you just have to not use the back button ;) for forums, our mark as read hack doesn't include that functionality unfortunately.
if you can come up with a good visited color that doesn't blow my color scheme feel free to do so.
