I currently use DVD Shrink but been having playback issues is there any other easy to use programs for just doing main movie backups I don't need all the menus and extra AC3s!

Use Re-Author button in DVD Shrink. Be sure to use the latest version. Just drag-and-drop you main movie from the right panel to the left and that's it. Uncheck the audio streams you don't need in Compression settings.

As for freeware, here are some common tools users around here use for main movie only and stripping out unwanted streams.

ReJig
DVDShrink
IfoEdit

Keep in mind, that that your burning software/method and your standalone DVD's Make and Model, also play a big part in your backup's playability. ;)

You could also download the trial of Pinnacle Instant Copy. As 2COOL mentions, I wouldn't be surprised if you see the skipping issues no matter what you use to make the DVD smaller.

Also, perhaps the best test you can do is find an original DVD5 in your collection and make a backup of that using DVDDecrypter. Rip to an ISO image and then use DVDDecrypter to burn the ISO. If that plays okay, you know your media, burner, and player all like each other.

@wildman

Are you using the latest version of DVD Shrink? I ask, because the last version supposedly fixes a bug that caused playback issues on certain set top boxes. You might do good to check your version number to what's currently being offered.

Also, if you're using DVD Shrink to activate Nero 6 for burning, be sure to manually select the proper burning speed for your media. It hasn't happened to me personally, but a friend of mine has mentioned that her program was left at the default of "maximum", and with 2.4X media (on a burner capable of 4X), every result was a coaster. By setting the speed back to 2.4, she says that she hasn't had a problem since. Again, I haven't seen this personally, but it just may give you a direction to try.

Good luck! And if you manage to fix your problem, give us a post back to let us know how you did it -- others just may thank you!

--Cheers!

Watch the movies from HD before you burn them to DVD+/-R, then you'll see where the problem is! PowerDVD 5 can open DVDs directly from a directory with VOBs and IFOs, or you could burn an image with Nero, mount it with Daemon tools and watch with almost any software player.
