At the risk of not being able to get one myself, Bet Buy is dumping the Samsung SIR-T165 settop HDTV receivers in stock for $99. SKU and such are at http://www.gotapex.com
Question: How can the firewire be faked out to believe there is a D-VHS recorder on the other end but the signal really be captured by a PC?
Seems like all that's needed is the proper software assuming the PC can handle the data rate.
Where would this software be?

wow that's an awesome deal.
see
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=309877
for a software solution that captures mpeg2ts to a PC without DVHS deck
or see
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=321774
for software currently in beta which will cost ~$100 once done to
emulate DVHS deck.
or you can play with ddr1394 on lunix.

eh, i found one that was returned and in the bin for service. i think that maybe the bestbuy drone didn't want me to walk out with it, and while i'm handy with an oscilliscope and a soldering iron, i walked away from the hassel.
or is it hassle?
probably the former.

The three closest Best buy stores were out of it within 3 days of the clearence, their computers said hte best buy 150 miles away had one left though so my brother drove down and tried to buy it. The bastards said they weren't selling it as they were usign it to drive their HDTV displays. My brother even bitched out the store manager and they wouldn't sell it to him.
What a waste.
