Boycott TDK media

tried to back up an album the other day on a TDK audio CD-R. it played fine in my PC, but not on my standalone CD player.

I've never had problems with CD-R's before, so couldn't quite work out why it wasn't reading it. so I went to the TDK site and saw this...

"TDK CD-R music discs are....specially coded to comply with the Digital
Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA)"

now TDK may not have any choice in the matter if it's law, but there is no indication of this issue anywhere on the packaging on the CD. I intend to return them and get a refund.

boycott TDK media now. OK - that's a bit harsh if they're just complying with law, but I strongly advise that you don't bother purchasing their "music" CD-R's :-)

The quote from the TDK site is for recordable music disks.

Recordable music disks are for use with stand-alone audio CD recorders. Audio CD recorders will not work with data CDRs. And yes, recordable music disks are crippled - or maybe it's more accurate to say the recorders are crippled and the disks are 'enabled' - and they cost more.

I don't know what's causing the problem with your player. Bottom line, don't buy an audio CD recorder and don't buy recordable music disks. Use data disks and your trusty CDRW drive - they make more compliant CDs (closer to the original red book standard).

aha! thanks for the info. it's making a bit more sense now.

yep - regular data CD-R's play just fine.

I'll stick to those in future :-)

Yes audio CDr is an agredious crime against humanity. Less capable media that costs more. I laugh at the people who buy them every time and cry a little inside each time that such a crime is commited. Even if the people are stupid. audio CD-r is just wrong.
