Some of the video i would like to encode has this artifact or whatever this is, on fast movement it looks like the video does not get deinterlaced properly. When you encode the video it removes the undeinternlaced look but objects involed in fast motion seem "ghosted" or "blurred".

Hi-

That's interlacing. If you don't like the results that you get when using your current deinterlacer, perhaps try another one. You didn't say what you're using to deinterlace, but several of them deinterlace by blending together the fields to create "ghosts" or blurred motion.

What's this from, PAL or NTSC, DVD or capture? Whatever it is, there's a good chance you can restore the progressive frames, and not have to deinterlace at all, if it's from a movie. Not really an XviD question, though.

Thats a screenshot from dvd2avi 1.76, so whatever deinterlacer it uses to preview the vob files. Not all of the video exhibits this behaviour, it only happens when there is alot of movement in the scene.

The image in question is from a Pal dvd.

No, dvd2avi does not have any deinterlacer and there is good reason why this only happens in high motion scenes please read here http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm probably decomb would be a good choice to start with here.

i'm confused, can someone help me identify what type of video this is.

I can examine frame by frame if need be but i need to know what i am looking for. In dvd2avi do i need to swap field order, force film, or leave it on none.

- Examining the video closely it looks like it grabs frame1 and frame3 to create frame2. This happens at irregular intervals and these "blended" frames are only noticeable at scene changes.

frame1= http://users.froggy.com.au/annand/frame1.JPG
frame2= http://users.froggy.com.au/annand/frame2.JPG
frame3= http://users.froggy.com.au/annand/frame3.JPG

- There are no doubled frames in the video.

Oh-my! Looks like some messed up NTSC-->PAL conversion. This should be a tough job to deinterlace; perhaps some of the scripts ScharfisBrain posted in the AviSynth forum can help you.

@Teegedeck: No!

It is not a NTSC->PAL conversion.

It seems to be a simple phase-shift!

just apply a script with

Telecide(order=1,post=0,guide=2)

(If output is messed up, try order=0)

I am having a problem with telecide usage.

This works:
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\MPEG2DEC3.DLL")
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\DECOMB510.DLL")
Mpeg2Source("H:\Dvdrips\Xena\Season2\Volume1\ep3\ep3.d2v", idct=2 )
Telecide(order=1,post=0,guide=2)

But this does not:
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\MPEG2DEC3.DLL")
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\DECOMB510.DLL")
Clip=Mpeg2Source("H:\Dvdrips\Xena\Season2\Volume1\ep3\ep3.d2v", idct=2 )
Clip1=Trim(Clip,0,62218)
Clip2=Trim(Clip,62219,0)
Clip1=Crop(Clip1,14,2,696,572)
Clip1=Telecide(order=1,post=0,guide=2)
Clip1=LanczosResize(Clip1,496,368)
Clip2=Crop(Clip2,14,2,696,572)
Clip2=BilinearResize(Clip2,496,368)
Clip2=TemporalSoften(Clip2,2,20,0)
Return Limiter(Clip1 + Clip2)

When i try run the script i get "invalid function to argument telecide".

you forgot to assign a variable to telecide. telecide has no input!

LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\MPEG2DEC3.DLL")
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\DECOMB510.DLL")
Clip=Mpeg2Source("H:\Dvdrips\Xena\Season2\Volume1\ep3\ep3.d2v", idct=2 )
Clip1=Trim(Clip,0,62218)
Clip2=Trim(Clip,62219,0)
Clip1=Crop(Clip1,14,2,696,572)
Clip1=clip1.Telecide(order=1,post=0,guide=2)
Clip1=LanczosResize(Clip1,496,368)
Clip2=Crop(Clip2,14,2,696,572)
Clip2=BilinearResize(Clip2,496,368)
Clip2=TemporalSoften(Clip2,2,20,0)
Return Limiter(Clip1 + Clip2)

Or:

LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\MPEG2DEC3.DLL")
LoadPlugin("D:\DVDRIP~1\AUTODU~1\SOFTS\AVSFILE\DECOMB510.DLL")
Mpeg2Source("H:\Dvdrips\Xena\Season2\Volume1\ep3\ep3.d2v", idct=2 )
Clip1=Trim(0,62218).Telecide(order=1,post=0,guide=2).Crop(14,2,696,572).LanczosResize(496,368)
Clip2=Trim(62219,0).Crop(14,2,696,572).BilinearResize(496,368).TemporalSoften(2,20,0)
Clip1+Clip2
Limiter()

Edit later: You're right about the bracket, demonmagnet. Imagine my embarrassment. :) It's corrected now. I hope all the interlacing has now magically disappeared, without any deinterlacing having been done at all.

Thanks for all the help guys. That has helped me a great deal.

PS. manono left out a bracket in TemporalSoften;)
