Where to start ....

There is so much information here I don't know where to start ....
What I think I'm really trying to do is play my movies on a DVD player.. but also trying for a decoder that can decode a large % of movies on the internet and also trying to be know enough to be able to configure ffdshow where I can see what it actually does.(and I know its a mpg decoder) So my questions are ...

1. Where should I start my lesson to (know enough to mess around with ffdshow) lean about decoding

2. How can I get different types of movies like avi mpg and asf to dvd to watch on tv.

3. A good decoder that will show you a large percentage of movies on the Internet.

4. Oh yea what are the best decoder for decodeing DVD movies. And I just don't want one decoder cause I know just one can't do all DVD's

I think you need to spend some time reading on the forum. Unfortunately, not just to pick up technical pointers.

no help will be given on DVD movies "that you do not own"

and I want to start to copy my collection of DVD cause ever film industry uses a different EEC on the DVD's that they distribute.

And I have read the rules on your forum and waited the five day to be able to post a question.

I really meant to say clips, cause there are different animated clips and small clips of movies on the internet and they use Divx and Xvid that need to be decode to be played.

You don't want to learn do you? Small clips or movies, it doesn't matter. It can very well be that those clips are portions of copyrighted material, but it can also be that they are not. The problem is that there is no way for us to verify that. Have a look at point 2 of this sticky:

First problem AndreL: you forgot question marks :). There is no exact point where to start, but it's sure that you need first to gain some knowledge about digital video's ground. About formats, codecs, containers etc.

Unclear question. Do you talk about playback on standalone DVD player?
In any case TV out and some software is best way. No standalone which can playback all codecs and their special features (GMC).

It's called player. Decoders are actually codecs. As I saw, clips are mostly in following formats: MOV - most of movie trailers is in that format. Get Apple Quicktime for it (MOV is not supported by standalones, as I know). There are some plugins for AVISynth for MOV read. VFW, ASF supported by developer, Microsoft, so it's in Win Media Player. Mpg - it's old and well supported. Diverse DivX (Mpeg4) codecs - ffdshow + some player (BS Player, Media Player Classic etc..)

There is no best, at least not best for every case, every user. You must try which is best for you.

Though AndreL retracted his initial statement, he asked about both "movies on the internet" and "How can I get..." which can be interpreted to mean, "How can I obtain..." Note that you are the only person to attempt to answer AndreL's technical questions, after 150+ readings of this thread. That is because Rule 6 prohibits members' assistance.

Believe me or not, but I completely agree with forum rules, especially with rule #6. I have site too, where I prohibited any postings about illegal obtaining.
Fact is that AndreL is very unclear in his questions. But this:
"2. How can I get different types of movies like avi mpg and asf to dvd to watch on tv." - it's clear that here he talks not about how getting movies from Net, but how to get them to dvd (player I assume). He talks about some conversion by me, what is main theme of this forum.
I don't think that forum members didn't answer because of forum rules, but because of unclear made questions, because of asking usual beginner questions instead of looking guides, search forum...

I'll have to agree with ppera2. If you dissect the question:
"How can I get [] movies to dvd to watch on tv."
So, he wants to convert whatever he's having (let's keep it at humorous short clips and the like, as he claimed - how can we trust eachother if we don't believe what we say is our source material) to DVD. That's what this place is for. But cause he mentions "from the internet" it's suddenly suspicious and all. Newsflash - Anime Fansubs as practiced by many of the board's respected members are movie clips (well, series) downloaded off the internet. And if somebody asks about converting those to DVD, nobody looks up.

It is clear that point 2 is about "the large % of movies from the internet". He just has to learn to ask the questions in the 'correct' way ...
