I'm even more confused as communist. How did you find this forum but not the main site? Don't take this as criticism.. I'm just trying to figure out why somebody would know forum but not the site.. maybe that understanding will help me make this link more obvious.

i for one often point people to forum.doom9.net if they approach me with video related questons i cannot answer or think it sending them for a good read does better than me explaining it. Other people might do the same. Thus, yes, it is possible for people to know the forum but not the site address :)

I just now realised there is no pointer from the forum back to the site. If it's not possible to add such a button to the buttons on the top, it could be worth adding the links to a sticky.

I've added a link to the welcome message (that's the only way to have it shown everywhere). Is that better?

Am I too smart to know that if I get an url like something.site.com to try www.site.com as well? Feels like the most natural thing to me..

Maybe a nice new (long) button saying 'Doom9 Downloads' to the right of the 'Home' button, might do the trick :rolleyes:

I really don't have the skills to create my own buttons and I don't particularly care to learn that kind of thing. However, since you can always return to the index page via the "Doom9's Forum" link above a table, and I've never used the home button, home now goes home... to my website.

If the 'home' button is now going to the Doom9.org/.net home page, it might be a good idea to have the 'home' button have a different coloured background, say blue - using the same colour shade as your home page background!

And hey.. if people confuse this with a link home (btw now we have three.. the home button, the link at the very top plus we also have one at the bottom of each page, right next to contact us.. and judging by the amount of mails that contact us link gets I think some people must find that position after all) it's all good because they now certainly come across that main site at some point. Site and forum belong together.. the link from site to forum doesn't look different, it is run by the same guy so why make a difference? It's not like I have two different site.. I have only one.

@r6d2: hmm.. mark forum, type www, press enter. That's only 3 characters you have to type ;)

Hmmm. This post has caused me to stop and ponder life for a bit. I can't tell you how many countless hours I have spent with clients over the heuristics of site design - mostly around the fact that you don't need links everywhere to get everywhere. They insist otherwise - put links in text, graphics, headers, footers, wherever. The more posts I see like this (and elsewhere), the more I am starting to question my philosophy...

When I do have free reign over a site's design, I guess I'm a fan of a common nav bar (either left or top) and no pop-up pages that also allow navigation. This, of course, reduces the available screen real estate for content, so it's a trade-off.

I wouldn't kill yourself Doom9, I think as long as 98% of the users out there can infer there is additional content when the "forum." is removed from the URL, your good.

Oh well.. we don't want to make it too easy for people, do we? Now there are plenty of ways to get to my site and I actually want people to read the news.. I don't spend I don't know how much time every day compiling news items (ask swede, he might know how much time it takes.. this is so much routine I don't even remember that I always go to bed late because I never take the time it takes for news into account when I compile the schedule for after work hours).

Nope. I can see it if I open a new browser window and put www.freewebs.com/ec03/DownL.gif in the address bar, but I cannot see the image embedded in the post. I just see the red-x 'image not available' thingy.

Interesting. I didn't want to put the URL in as a link, but vBulletin converts it automatically. If you click on it, you get brought back to this thread. Apparently freewebs redirects you back to the referrer when you try to link into their domain.

What gets me is all some one has to do is look at the top of each page a see the little button that says home and look on the left side thy will see downloads

It's probably just an editing oversight.

For example, he might have originally written -

"I'm as confused as communist"

Then edited it to -

"I'm even more confused as communist"

Simple proof-reading oversight; forgot to change 'as' to 'than'. I find myself making the same sort of editing mistake all the time.
