why do my xvid files now decoded by divx ? Help needed !

i'm using the latest XviD (1.0 RC2 binary) by Koepi & latest DivX 5.1.1 codecs.

the problem is that my xvid files are now decoded by DivX decoder which previously decoded properly by XviD.

i don't how happened but this is the second time that DivX owns Xvid files (before reformatting my win xp the same thing happened and after the format until now there was no problem).

(i generally use bsplayer but a few days ago i had to install real alternative and media player classic !?, i don't know if this is related)

so according to that:

1) What might be the reason of this situation ? What caused this ?

2) How can i fix this ?

3) Playing Xvid files with DivX decoder has any downside such as giving less picture quality or like that ?

Disable MPEG4 support in the DivX5.x decoder settings.

By default, upon installation, DivX is selected to decode any mpeg-4 content
To override that, in DivX's properties > Quality Settings, uncheck Support Generic MPEG-4
I believe you'd better decode different mpeg-4 streams with their native decoder, since that is supposed to give you better image quality.

hmm interesting, following your answers i disabled the mpeg4 generic support and it fixed.

but i'm %100 sure that it's checked also before i got this problem and XviD decoder properly happily playing my files in contrast that setting.

i don't get the trick here but anyway thanks 4 the quick answers guys :)

i am having a similar problem here, divx decodes some os my xvid encoded files here, but not all of them :confused: :confused: :confused: i just tryed reinstaling rc2 then xvid decoded it properly, then i went to college and now after just 4 hours DivX (5.1.1) is decoding some of my files again...

Did you check the fourCC?
Open the 'xvid-encoded' files in VdubMod and click File-> File Information. If FourCC : [XVID] then it should be decoded by XviD if it says DX50 it should be decoded by DivX 5.

a small explanation why divx5 and xvid can decode each other:

divx5, xvid (but also 3ivx, nero digital, ffvfw/ffmpeg aso...) are all mpeg-4 codecs
as mpeg-4 codecs output mpeg-4 compliant streams, every mpeg-4 codec should be able to decode all other mpeg-4 encodings too without a quality difference!

so to say it should not be a problem to use divx5 to decode xvid and vice versa (many people also use ffdshow to decode both, which is a totally different mpeg-4 decoder)
sometimes some decoders have bugs or there are other incompatibilites (mostly cause by the old AVI container) which prevent this interoperability, but most of the time it should work

also important to note is that divx3 isnt mpeg-4 compliant! meaning you cant decode divx3 with a mpeg-4-only decoder

I noticed that even if I disable the MPEG4 support in the DivX5.x decoder settings, it comes back after a few plays.

Have you any idea why ?

I searched with regedit the "Support generic Mpeg-4" and put 0 everywhere, but it comes back to 1...

it should be enough to untick the mpeg-4 option in divx5 to disable it ;)
at least here it works correctly

Thank you for helping, if you have a definite solution. How many Mpeg4 codecs do you have installed?

Remember, if you want XviD encodes to play with the XviD decoder the encodes 4cc must say XviD (not Div50/DivX).

With DivX's decoder there isn't a 4cc selector so you might have to deselect the decoders 'Support Generic Mpeg-4' setting: -
