2.35:1 .avi to DVD

hi there. I've recently converted some .avi movies to DVD using TMPGEnc without any problems.

they had resolutions of 592 x 320 (1.85:1) so I just chose...

aspect ratio of source = 1:1

aspect ratio of video = 16:9 display

video arrange method = full screen

...and they came out a treat.

however, I now have an .avi with a resolution of 640 x 272 (2.35:1) and am wondering what settings to use so that I don't distort the picture?

I'm sure this is down to me not fully understanding what those settings actually mean, and the effect they have, but I have tried my best all morning to research this - and I still don't quite get it :-)

I just want to convert a 640 x 272 .avi movie to DVD without any distortion (or as little as possible)

any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might try FitCD. It guesses a lot of the source parameters, and you can create an AVS script to check the output with VirtualDub before handing it to TMPGEnc.

More important that DAR, which is what you're looking at, is PAR. Take a look at the aspect ratios guide on www.doom9.org to get the picture.

thankyou for the reply, but whoa there - are you saying that TMPGEnc can't deal with it?

surely it's just down to my ignorance - it must be able to handle 2.35:1 files, right?

come on chaps - I know that someone out there knows the answer to this!

You can't use 16:9 and Fullscreen on your Source. This setting works only with 16:9 (1.78:1), not on 1.85:1 or 2.35:1.

Try Center (Custom Size) or, the better Way, AVISynth for Resizing.

If it is a PAL-Video, set the Size to 704x320(328).
If it is a NTSC-Video, set the Size to 704x272

unfortunately TMPGEnc DVD Author (which I use, and really like) will only accept NTSC 704x480 / 720x480 and PAL 704x576 / 720x576.

know of any other DVD authoring tools which will accept the resolutions you mention above?

people must be converting 2.35:1 .avi's to DVD all the time. I'm sure it must be easier than this :-)

BTW, what Kika suggests may only apply to square pixel sources. That's when PAR is important. You perhaps thought the guide reading homework I gave you was too much work, then again, when you try to follow suggestions without having a clue of what they are about, you'll find problems. Better learn. ;)

I can see DVD2SVCD and DVD2AVI commandline, but no AVI2DVD.
