I decide to open this new thread although my question is related to the eralier wmv thread, but too old I think.

I am very confused with wmv9 setting trying to encode avi file on VirtualDubMod. Here is my usual steps.

1. open the source file, in this case, avi file
2. select compression, select wmv9, and then click configure
3. It opens new window, namely, window media video v9 propeties. Amongthe setting values, the problem is related to two pass VBR.
4. If two pass VBR is selected, I have to point log file, first and second pass.
5. But what are these, where I can find, what to do with these log file? I dont understand at all.
6. When I choose, one pass VBR, sometimes get good picture with moderate file size, and sometimes bad picture quality and huge file size.
7. Please enlighten me about all this headaching complexity.

Thanks

1) dont post too many new threads if there exist other ones fitting your question (the same goes for your XVD thread btw)
2) use search to understand the basic functions of video encoding:
a) a log file (also called pass/stats or whatever) is created when doing 2pass encodes during the first pass, storing the infos detected in the first pass
of course you can choose whatever path you want to store your log files
b) after knowing how 2pass works, search for how 1pass works (again this is the same for all sorts of codecs, including xvid, divx5, vp6 or whatever)
