Some codecs like OGM and Matroska require audio/video post-processors like Vosub and Directshow subtitle filter. Is it a good idea to leave these filters installed? I'm afraid they might affect the performance of the decoders since they are processed like this
AVI Splitter --> Decoder (Divx/Xvid) --> Post-processor (Subtitle Mixer)

They should have minimal impact unless they are actually doing some work (at least any well designed subtitle filter should behave almost like a straight passthrough in this case).

I would be more concerned about making sure you have the latest versions of the filters installed - in my experience some of the older versions can cause problems with some DirectShow media players.

Avoid installing filters unless...
* you really need these (eg: subtitling one)
* you want to run into decoding conflicts...

And If you need to do playback filtering you can still use ffdshow...
