Hello,
I've a problem with dvd2avi and my cpu usage.
When i use dvd2avi to encode a film in divx, the cpu is never used more than its 50%.
I've a P4C 3.0ghz with hyperthreading and the problem is there when using divx or xvid, no matter.
Furthermore, not even one of the two cpu, is used at 100%.
So, this make my video conversion very slowwwwww.
Could you help me?

What do you mean by slow?
What version of DVD2AVI are you using?


A couple of general hints:

First of all we have to remember that DVD2AVI is not threaded for multiple processors, so decoding and resizing etc will not take advantage of HT. I'm not sure, but I think both DivX and XviD uses HT. (Could someone enlighten me on this point?)

There have been some indications that HT doesn't quite work as well as you'd hope for, but so far my only experience with HT is that the task manager doesn't show the right %, because it expects the two processor parts of the P4 to work at equal speed, which means that it only reports 50% as total usage if one is idle and the other 100%, ((0+100)/2=50) even when the truth is that the processor is running at close to 100 because the idle part is only using 1% of the total available. (correct calculation should be (0*1+100*99)/100=99 )

I mean, when encoding into divx (signle pass) without ny option, it runs at 8/9 fps !! :confused:

what is the problem?
I tried with different dvd2avi version and different video files (vobs).
I tried with dvd2avi 1.76, 1.82 and 1.76 with decode fix.
i run under wxp sp1 with all updates, on a p4 3.0 with 1024 mo ddr (dual chnnel), and divx codec 5.1.1 pro.

...it runs at 8/9 fps .... and divx codec 5.1.1 pro. DivX 5.1.1 settings are likely to be your issue; nothing to do with DVD2AVI, per se.

Seach the DivX Forum thread titles for the keyword "slow" and you'll see numerous threads on the subject.
