View Full Version : Open/closed GOP

I recently found out that some "freezing video" problems I had with DVD-lab derived from closed GOP, so I used open GOP and now everything is OK. TMPGEnc DVD Author, unlike DVD-lab, gives me no problem even with closed GOP (more forgiving muxer?) and the file size is smaller.
My question is: are both open and closed GOP giong to play smoothly on a standalone? Is one of them more DVD compliant than the other?
Thanks in advance :)

If you are using DVDLab with TMPGEnc-Encoded Movies, you should use the Alternative Muxing Engine in DVDLab.
End yes, open and closed GOPS do both work correct on "normal" DVDs without things like seamless branching.

Why? It seems strange to me, since Mediachance has teamed up with Pegasys Inc and released DVD Source Creator, which is a DVD version of TMPGEnc...

Same here, but there are definatly some problems with some players.
My Afreey don't has any problems with DVDs made by TMPGEnc and DVDLab in normal muxing Mode, but my Denon has.
It happens only with DVDLab in normal Mode, in alternate Mode or by using an other Authoring Program, both Players are doing a propper playback.

So if I import the vob muxed with TMPGEnc DVD Author in DVD-lab without demultiplexing them and then compile my project (even with normal mode, since the vobs are just used as they are), everything is gonna be ok, isn't it?

Yes, then all is OK. Don't ask me why, but i have tested this with many other Players, DVDLab is producing jerky Videos with TMPGEnc-Source.
My other Tools, TMPGEnc DVD Author, SpruceUp, IFOEdit, Pinnacle Impressions, are working always correct. This happens only with DVDLab.

I have DVDLAB 1.3. I couldn't find anything in the manual about an "Altenate Mode" or "Alternate Muxing Engine". Can you explain?

You should find an option to choose the alternative muxing engine after you click on compile. If you can't find it, then it's an option for 1.4 pro beta 1...
