is there a greyscale-only codec?

since im currently working with black&white material i wonder if there is a codec that only saves (and compresses) luma
i think it would save some space
or am i wrong with that?

B/W movie is hard with every codec. Just pick one and test :)

When encoding video without color information most modern video codecs spend very few extra or wasted bits on the "missing" chroma planes. I do not think a codec specifically for grayscale would be much better, if at all, i.e. that you would be able to measure or see any difference.

Sirber: yes, old noisy b/w movies are hard to encode, but I don't think that was the question...

1. Just kill the rest of chroma with avisynth and you won't waste many bits with any codec.

2. The Xvid codec has a black and white encoding mode which disregards color info alltogether.
