Is 720x480 too demanding?

Hello,

If I encode my movies to 720x480 resolution, is it too demanding for low spec pc (e.g. PII, PIII some low spec P4)? I am afraid some low spec pc can't play. I am currently using P4 2.4, so I don't have any problem to play the movie.

I encode all my movies at 720x480 with bframes and they play back flawlessly on my XBOX, which is a celeron 733 with 64 megs of memory.

On PII or so systems 640x480 is really pushing it. If you use VBR audio for example it "will not" keep synch no matter how you mux it. You will probably be doing good to get CBR in synch with smooth playback at 640x480 or so. To help things you can play back in VLC (http://videolan.org) or geexbox (http://geexbox.org). The latter is one of my favorite. It adds a little less than 4Mb overhed to a CD and makes the CD pretty much able to play itself on all x86 systems no matter how dense the end user may be.

Just be sure not to use the native Xvid Decoder
