Overlay mode for SUBTITLES

If I'm in right place,
Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to make
OVERLAY mode for the subtitles in my
DivX players work?
It doesn't work at the moment (after I
formatted my hard disk and settled Windows 98
and the programs again on machine-I had to do that,
it become realy slow and crowded with programs
but movies played just fine)
Now, everything is in mess!

I don't know even which codec to put.
There are thousonds of them!

1.How to make OSD (overlay mode for subtitle to work)
2.Which codec to put on PC?

1) It depends on the player you're using. For ex. on Bsplayer, under subtitles menu, there's an option to drawn subtitles in the overlay surface. You just need to open the subtitle with bsplayer and you'll see it on your TV.

2) Install vsfilter, it's a directshow based subtitles player. It will load everytime you have external/internal subtitles (for external you need the same name as the movie, check documentation). I don't think you need to specify anything in the preferences to be able to play it on overlay.
