View Full Version : Chroma Motion Causes the Dreaded Macro Blocks?

In an earlier thread, kilg0r3 pointed out that the Chroma Motion feature causes macro blocks in the video.
XviD RC-3 (Koepi's build.)
Decoding with Windows Media Player 6.4

I could not find any other threads which discussed this in more detail. I know that Chromo Motion also helps to reduce the final filesize, and I would like to keep using it; however, if it is known for certain that Macro Blocks are the result of this, than I would not touch it.

In an encode a made last night (20 minute anime episode) there were some scenes which contained these ugly macro blocks all over the place, and yes, I did use the Chromo Motion feature.

Even after doing a side by side test, neither clip (whether Chromo Motion was enabled or not) produced any blocks.

EDIT: God is playing games with my mind. When I check the same exact scene in the episode again, the Macro Blocks are not present. I am not using any post-process or filters for playback (not even FFDShow.)

While we're on the subject: Are Macro Blocks an encoding issue or a decoding issue?

Edit: silly thing removed...sorry 'bout that.

Are Macro Blocks an encoding issue or a decoding issue?

They're an integral part of MPEG-4. If you decide you want your video to be a smaller file, there will be more visible blocks.

The smaller the file, the more XviD has to compress things. Higher and higher compression means it throws away more and more detail, up to the point where detail isn't 'small detail' anymore, but stuff you can really see.

What is really odd though, is that I do not see them anymore. I am 100% sure that they were present, yet when I recheck my encode, they're gone! It's driving me nuts, because I do not know for sure if something on my system has changed.

Wrong. It's just for increasing the accuracy of ME, anime or not.

Where did I say that?

Was Tornberry perhaps actually talking about the chroma-optimizer?

In your short bug(s) list. The search function for this message board is ridiculous, so I gave up looking for it again.

Couldn't it be that kilg0r3's memory serves him well and he's actually never said a thing like that?

Forget what I said. I was in a very bad mood today.

No harm done. It is not so unlikely that I indeed did say such nonsense. Time and again I just seem to like to make a fool of myself :).
/Citing a signature of a wise board member: 'Don't mistake my high post count for knowledge!' BTW, I sometimes have to remind me that this statement is directed toward the reader AND the writer of my posts.:p

AND, allways look at the date of the posts you are reading. A year before now, the codec you are researching information about _as well as_ the writer's brain might have been (is this the right tense?) in a very different state of development.;)

My brain is still pre-alpha, I can tell you! Can I?

While we're at it, is it advisable to use the chroma optimizer on cartoons/anime?

Yes. (hmm, that reminds me of RadicalEd's avatar)

Really? I don't think I saw it. I don't even like Yajirobe, but there's something about this gif that's just funny.

It was the best custom title I could think of.
