single vs two pass with high quality.

I normally compress two types of videos.
Video from HDTV (MPEG2) which will end up at 640x480 or 768x432
or
Video from my TV tuner which is captured 640x480 using huffyuv (then deinterlaced and run through pixie dust)

I have always used two pass and set the target size with the bitrate calculator so that the final file will be around 17.5mb/min so I can fit a normal 40min show on a 700mb cd.

I have all the settings turned off (b frames, gmc, chroma, etc)
I have VHQ set to 1
and motion search set to the highest.
Oh, I've recently started using "Turbo"
I set my Quant to MPEG for my hdtv video and H.263 for my tv captures.



ANYWAYS, I have been told by many people that I am using a very high bitrate so there is no need to use two passes.
I've always thought that I would always get better video if I use two passes.

Is there any truth to what people are telling me? Should I just use one pass from now on and save time?
