View Full Version : AutoGK Subtitles Problem...

Hi everyone,
I'm kind of a newbie with encoding precesses, but I've already done a few movies with AutoGK. Usually, when I encode a movie with subtitles, I first encode the file without subs, rip the subs, and THEN reencode it with virtualdub in order to have the subs in the bottom black border.
But here, I want to directly encode the subs with AutoGK since the episodes are in 4:3 (no black borders). I then select the subtitles in AutoGK and hit start. 9 times out of 10, the subtitles don't appear in the final avi file. Is there a reason why ?
I have no subs file in the directory (no .SRT whatever neither IDX).
Sorry to bother if the subject has already been posted somewhere, I tried to search but didn't find many results regarding this problem...
*** EDIT ***
Ok I didn't see the latest version is 0.96, I was using 0.8 !
I'll try with the new one.
*** SECOND EDIT ***
It still doesn't work !
Pleeeeaaaase somebody help meee...

To my knowledge, reencoding an encoded movie deteriorates its quality further. Each encode will will degrade a movie, however little. A second encode will treat your first encoded movie as the original, and on further encoding the quality will fall further.
AGK puts subs inside the frame, or sometimes partly below the frame if there are two lines.
My personal experience has been mixed with AGK as far as the subtitles go, and I understand your frustration completely.
I always get this error message:
VOBSUB
Usage: rundl32 vobsub.dll.Cutter <src> <dst> <countfromstart> <hh1:mm1:ss1:ms1> [hh1:mm2:ss2:ms2]
src, dst: Don't append any file name extension, use only path/title
Countfromstart: if non-zero, starting time will be subtracted out of every timestamps
hh1:mm1:ss1:ms1: Starting time
hh2:mm2:ss2:ms2: Ending time (optional)
OK
This message looks written in English, but actually it's in Promish. Promish is a dialect of the English language that programmers use. I can't read Promish, so I always oblige by clicking the 'OK' button. It comes while splitting the file into 2 or 3 CDs, at the end of the first cut. So if you setup the job and go to sleep, you will comeback later to find the job halted waiting for your response.
Sometimes everything is fine, and the subfile is split appropriately. But in my latest encode, the subfile wasn't split at all. It's apparently our lack of knowledge/experience with AGK.
Probably someone should address this issue of subs more comprehensively. Probably manono may think about updating his magnificent help file of AGK.
Regards.

Thanks for the kind words, ukb007-
But I don't understand that anymore than you do. Did you try splitting them yourself afterwards? The guide is being updated for AutoGK 1.0, but there won't be any mention of the problem you have.
Anyway, I think that that wolverine_rulez wants his burned in. And I also agree with you that reencoding the .avi is a waste of time and degrades the movie a bit. He should do the movie in GKnot if he wants to create black below the video, so he can put the subs there.
wolverine_rulez-
Rather than waiting for the movie to be completely encoded and then finding out the subs didn't make it, run the Preview and have a look before encoding. If the first subs you want aren't there, start Previewing the other sub streams. And don't do anything screwy. Don't remove the subs with Stream Processing in DVDDecrypter, and don't check Forced Subs in Advanced settings, thinking that will force the subs to show up (unless you really do have forced subs).
And you won't have any SRT subs, as AutoGK doesn't perform OCR. But you should have idx and sub files, if the subs are in the vobs. Try running the Preview and see.

I think we (wolverine_rulez and myself) have to understand what manono says in his post: we have to create black portions below the picture-margin to have the subs burned in there. The black portion must be a part of the 'frame'. We can't burn the subs outside the frame as will happen when we crop the black away and encode.
When the cropped picture plays in WMP, it's the player that puts the black bars above and below.

As I do not have enough time ahead, I can't really get into GKnot, so I'll stick with autogk for the moment. I know reencoding's lame, that's why I chose to encode w/subs directly now. But I've still got the subtitles problem.
Here's what I did :
Rip the episode (it's a 21mn series episode) on the HDD (it's 900Mb)
As I didn't check Stream Processing, I've got 3 files :
- VTS_01 - Stream Information.txt
- Vts_01_0.ifo
- Vts_01_1.vob
I run autogk, choose english w/french subs, run the preview, and it doesn't work.
I tried to read the DVD with powerDVD, the subs show. I tried rip them with subrip, it works. only autogk seems to not read the subs.

Hi-
So that didn't help, eh? Lets make sure that your DVDDecrypter is set up correctly. Do you have the latest version (AutoGK doesn't work with earlier versions)? It's ver. 3.1.9.0. Are you ripping in IFO Mode (Mode->IFO)? Then go Tools->Settings->IFO Mode->File Names, and make sure that both PGC and Angle number are checked.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow (I was using 3.1.5.0, but it worked with 2 episodes... weird)(and the two checkboxes weren't checked, by the way)

I just tried with 2 episodes that didn't work before : it now works fine, at least on these 2 episodes.
Thank you very much for this help. 22 episodes left to encode... my nights are going to be busy...

Good. I'm glad it's working for you, and thanks for reporting back.
22 episodes left to encode... my nights are going to be busy...
Just take some time to set up all 22 to run one after the other, and then let your computer work for a couple of days while you relax.

Yeah, that's what I did last night (an AutoGK 0.96 cool feature : JOBS!!), and everything went well (10 episodes).
I'm a happy man now...
I always get this error message:

Hi, i always get the same error on using "external subs" on every 2cdrip so far
i searched the board and i'll see only this post reporting same error thats why i post inhere ok :)
1)rip original into ISO using dvd-decrypter
2)mount iso and load from there into autogk(first of all the quality is amazing tx for this great app :) )

Yes, I use IFO mode of the right DVDDecrypter version although didn't mention it in my post above!
The quality of the bitmap subs aren't great anyway. So, for whatever it's worth, I may tell you guys what I do with satisfying results:
1. I process my VOBs without the subs in AGK, with a target size of 792 MB.
2. Then rip subs with SubRip via OCR.
3. Then I open the .srt file in SubtitleWorkshop and do textual corrections (e.g., we can delete additional lines meant for the hearing impaired, or make corrections in the spoken words themselves, like when the sub shows 'What do you know?' but the actual words spoken are 'What the hell d'you think you know?').
4. When I am satisfied, I save the subs as SAMI captioning with same title as my XviD.
5. Then I make a Mode-2 image of the two files together with m2cdmaker and burn it with Nero on an Imation 700 MB CD-R at 16x.
The .smi subs are much much smaller (in KBs) and very good quality, in comparison to the .rar and .idx files of the bitmap variety.
I apologise for putting so much test on the subject of SUBTITLES in here instead of the SUBTITLES section, but it came up naturally by way of discussion.
About AGK, I'll tell this, once again:
It is, as yet, without any parallel, and perhahps already being pilfered and put into some propriatory offerings unethically. Its advent ushered an era of lay mpeg-4 encoding with a strong incentive not to learn. One doesn't have to know anything other than how to click with a mouse. To me the most amazing feat that AGK has accomplished is automatizing the question of IVTC/DeInterlacing. This question used to be a kingsized headache for me, and a heady, slowly maddening battle in each encode. Now there's a deathly still in the battlefield, with AGK providing an overhead expressway from source vobs to finished avi.
Regards.

Honestly I didn't look that far up, so I was replying only to Piaf...
@all
I think I have to put more debug info into log file,so that I can see the comand line for VobSub cutter. Without it its very difficult so say what's wrong. You should try next version and report back with log file...
alrighty lenox take ur time ;) its already massive app keep it up!:)
tx for reply!

I also added a 5 min timeout to the subs splitting operation in the new version, so that it won't stop the queue. Is 5 min enough ?

You can grab version 1.30b in main AutoGK thread in development forum and give it a go - it should put full command line for vobsub cutter into logs. Then post them here.
