I searched briefly, but I don't think this has ever been asked before. Is it possible to losslessly convert an XviD "packed bitstream" AVI file into an unpacked AVI (and vice versa)?
Just curious. ;)

Mux to 3ivx mp4 then convert back to avi possibly? I don't know but this sounds like the best possibility to me.
EDIT: I don't know how to do unpacked -> packed though

In theory it's possible (and even easy), in practice I'm not aware of any program that could do that.
It seems that we're in a big need of a program that could manipulate AVIs - change headers, parse streams, etc. Any volunteer to code such thing? Note that when/if such program is ready, I would be happy to add packed <-> nonpacked conversion. I just need a "base".

tough beaware it sometimes creates vfr files when doing this, which will not be possible to hold in old avi
