i read the sticky guides but i kind of need more special information/help...
i am capturing tv shows in mpeg2 and then recode to xvid... then i got myself an via epia m10k to watch all my stuff. most of my files play perfect but some create too much cpu load, so i get framedrops. (using mplayer from source with -framedrop option) all videos have the same resolution (640x480 or smaller), ogg in 90kpbs and 2pass xvid from 700-1000kbps.
i cannot remember the exact settings for the problem-videos, but is there something i better should (not) use/do when encoding xvid for use on a slower system?
since i watch everything on a pal tv set the quality does not need to be *perfect*... what features of the codec eat up the most cpu time?
where could i save resources?
