i've been using the big 3 method of some time, and i have done many different backups of movies and season sets..however i can't figure this one out. i'm trying to backup x-files season 3 disc 1 *R1*, and something is screwy. i'm not removing anything, and encoding as normal. yet when i have the final product and go to test it in powerdvd, it stops after the fox home video screen at the start of the disc. i tried to open it in dvd shrink, and it said invaid menu error.
i used the same ifoupdate steps as i've used countless times and i know i didn't make an error there, i just can't figure out where else it would have come from. does the x-files sets need to be encoded differently?

hi charpunk and welcome to the forums!
i am not 100% sure what is causing those errors but there is some troubleshooting you can do.
open the original VIDEO_TS in ifoedit, and select DVD Play, and make note of all the titles, etc that are played following the fox screen.
then open your re-authored VIDEO_TS.ifo in ifoedit, run 'Get VTS sectors' and take note if there are any errors/corrections. then select DVD Play and take note of what happens. and at which point (whether it is a title or VMG etc) it no longer plays.
thanks

okay, just tried the method you suggested. the original dvd image video_ts works fine in dvd play. i opened up the re-authored video_ts and it stops playing when it hits chapter 1 title 7 which is in VTS 1. the original image has VTS 1 as 1 PGC at 15 seconds long. doitfast4u made VTS 1 dummy file. i wonder if this could be causing the problem.
running get vts sectors didn't produce any errors/corrections.

just for clarification it would have been ReAuthorist that created the dummy file, not DIF4U.
is that the only pgc in that vts?
the answer will decide the next course to take.

yes, the vts 1 only has that 1 pgc

did you run ifoupdate on that file?
could be causing the problem.
there are a number of aproaches you could use to fix this.
my prefered option would be:
1. if you have a copy of your VIDEO_TS folder that DIF4U created (exactly as created) copy it into a new folder and drag your re-authored vob files into that and run ifoupdate on them (only copy across the vobs you have altered/encoded) and only run ifoupdate on the ifos that are associated with those vobs - ie DONT ifoupdate VTS_01.ifo!
if you dont have a copy of this file you can use dvddecrypter to copy the vts_01.ifo, vts_01.bup, vts_1_0.vob, and the vts_1_1.vob to a seperate folder, copy them into your (final) VIDEO_TS folder, open the project in ifoedit, and run 'get vts sectors'. click 'ok' to any updating it wants to do, but take note if any errors are reported. then try playing it again and see if that fixes the problem.

that's the problem, i'm an idiot and copied the vts_01 into the DIF4U VIDEO_TS directory and in the ifoupdate set, i updated the VTS_01.ifo. I was in a rush getting this done, and completely forgot that the VTS_01 was a dummy and didn't need to be processed in ifoupdate. thanks for your help, it's working now.
