Which is the preferred conversion now? Xvid or DiVx?

Having got my fair share of D/Ls and conversions Ive done on DiVx, Ive just decided to purchase a Umax 6100 Xvid/DiVx player.

I intend to convert many of my films and burn several films to 1 DVDR for convenience sake, but unsure which method would be the best to go for?

Ive never converted to XVid, so dont have anything to compare with my own DiVX rips.

Which codec would you say is the best to go for, of are their advantages and disadvantages that I should take into account?

Especially useful, if anyone has the Umax 6100 and can comment on the playback on each of the formats?

There is a forum rule against asking what is best.

However, to answer your other questions: Try them both, use the one you like most.
(In this area of the forum your going to get most people saying Xvid is their prefered choice, and its mine too :D)

There is also a hardware player forum to ask about your player ;)

Xvid doesnt have the controls to stop it going over the maximum bitrate that your hardware player supports, so this is something to think about (although you are not likely to hit a bitrate that high if you are careful)

Agreed. But there is more besides guv question, I hope :)

So, as for your question in general:
XVid has more advanced features than DivX.
It can use multiple b-frames, it can use
3 warp point Global Motion Compensation.
It has improved motion estimation algorhytms
(at least, different from DivX :) )

Will it help to compress movie better ?
That really depends... Compare for yourself.

But be aware - advanced features may not be supported by
hardware players... That's the cost of a progress. :)
