View Full Version : film encoded with xvid 1.0 RC2 plays jerky

Since for a reason I can't tell the stable koepy version gave me an error when I tried to do a double pass encoding of a backup copy of a film made with dvdxcopy, I decided to try the last version of the xvid codec (1.0 RC2).

I have used the last version of virtuadubmod, and during the enconding seems all to work fine (I have made a two pass encoding, using the fast recompress option and using all the default parameter of xvid).

This morning when I try to see the result of the encoding process, I see that the film plays jerky (To see the film I have used both the last version of BSPlayer than mplayer for windows (not window media player).

Can anybody tells me why?

Thanks

1) Turn OFF packet bitstream
2) Use DivX or FFDShow to decode your XviD content

mplayer uses libavcodec and thus has the same error as ffdshow.

make sure to use the xvid decoder to playback your xvid content.

Also, I had stuttering too today! For exactly 2 seconds, as my playback started and the overlay wasn't created really.

You can try to force yv12 or yuv2 during playback with the xvid dshow filter. One of those 2 will help your problem.

clauv:

Please read the sticky about how to file proper bug reports.
You give a bit too few details to really tell us anything.

Also, dimzon is right. Packed bitstream is meant to solve certain choppy playback issues, but is widely known to cause them in other circumstances. It's sort of a mixed bag of results.

To be honest, it's meant to solve this scary "decoder bframe lag" message which everybody thought of as "broken video". It never meant to solve any choppyness.

packed bitstream is evil

No, it isn't.

Libavcodec/ffdshow is.

atucally i found mine was playing choppy because after i uninstalled rc 1 and put on rc 2, somehow ffdshow turned itself back on for xvid. i was scratching my head about that one for awhile...

Thanks for the report Jimmy, that helps a lot to track down and solve those issues :-) I wonder why that didn't happen here... windows weirdness i guess.

Thank for your answers.

It seems that the problem simply solved changing in the ffdshow the option for xvid from libavcodec to xvid (even if I want to do further checks). If i understand well, I can't use nomore mplayer to see my films, since I don't know if is possible to do the same thing for mplayer...
I read in another thread that disabling the packet bitstream will lead to error when using vitualdubmod... As soon as I have a little time I'll try to see myself which kind of porblems...
BTW since I am a newbie, there is some documentation I can read in order to know exactly how all the xvid parameters work (and what is exactly QPEL, GMC and so on?) I find a well done documentation from AndyPanix (

http://andypanix.altervista.org) but it doesn't explain all the terms.
I know that in the doom9 documentation section there is many docs but the main part of the ones I read is something like "do this and do that, don't worry to understand..." I'd like to understand all the concepts behind, if you can suggest me some well done documentation i'll be very happy.

Thanks

hey clauv, try setting the xvid in ffdshow on disable.

for documentation, have a look in the xvid faq post, look for the post by snowbeach and try getting that pdf out of his signature, its fairly outdated, but it is fairly descriptive.

That's not so, clauv. Ffdshow is a filter that works together with the player. You can still use your player. You can even use ffdshow, as long as you set it to decode Xvid with Xvid.
I read in another thread that disabling the packet bitstream will lead to error when using vitualdubmod...
That's only half of it. Disabling packed bitstream will lead to Vdub(mod) complaining about B-frame lag at the beginning of the clip.
It will work perfectly however, it's just a complaint, not a critical error. Ignore it.

Check my new topic.

That may be so, but mplayer doesn't use any DirectShow filters; it comes with it's own filters, one of which is libavcodec-based and used to decode XviD, so as long as libavcodec isn't fixed to handle packed bitstream and several B-frames correctly (dunno if it is already) mplayer won't play those files correctly.

(The reason it doesn't use DirectShow for decoding is that it's really a *NIX player, even though it's also been ported to windows.)

I did as you told me and I tried to encode a film disabling the packed bitstream option.
Unfortunately I had a strange behaviour of vdubmod: it has stopped at 86% of the enconding ( I haven't notice if in the first or in the second pass). I try to explain: the system has not blocked (when I selected an option vdubmod open the menu correctly ) only the enconding has freezed (but the time counting worked).

Someone knows if this behaviour may be due to the packed bitstream deselection?

Anyway this evening I'm gonna do further tests...

Thanks

Hi,

as many users has reported here, xvid playback is not jerky with vmr 7/9.

i have windows me and a directx 8 graphic card (ati radeon 9100). so i had only directx 8.2 installed.

in my media player classic are the vmr7/8 options grayed out.

what is necessary to use vmr7/9 ? directx 9 and/or windows xp ??

greetings, Heini011.
