Sometimes when I try to play an .avi file with MPC 6.4.7.6, I'll get an error message relating to an audio switcher problem, MPC tries unsuccessfully to download something from the web, and MPC won't play the audio on the file. Rebooting solves the problem - on reboot MPC plays fine, at least for a while.

When I'm having a problem with MPC, neither Windows Media Player nor GSpot work properly. WMP tries to download codecs, but doesn't work. gspot is unable to render audio.

Any ideas what could be the problem and how to fix?

Is this happening with a specific avi file or does it happen on all files? If it only happens with a specific file is because you don't have the appropriate decoder installed. What codec is used with the audio part and how many audio tracks are there in the avi file? Please provide more details...

When it happens, it happens on all files. The problem should not be that I don't have the right codec installed, as rebooting solves the problem (until it happens again).

One audio track. MP3. I have Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec and MPEG Layer-3 Decoder installed (so says GSpot).

Could something be masking the codecs? I also use Foobar2000 (kernel streaming output) to play mp3's and mp4's (although I shut it down before trying to play avi's), and gspot. I don't usually play with audio settings.

Well... have you noticed a pattern for this malfunction? I mean, does it always happen after you use foobar, shut it down and then open MPC for example? I guess you could try some other mp3 decoding filter. Moonlight audio dekoda decodes mp3 as well I think or you could try ffdshow's audio filter... Other than that I have no idea what's causing this.

No pattern I can discern :(

I've just recently read about this kernel streaming thingy. If foobars audio renderer really shuts down everything else during its operation then I can imagine it stays stuck and DS cannot create its own renderer anymore. You should try playing some sound _not_ through directshow when this happens. Launch a game, preview an avi in virtualdub, etc.

That makes sense. I've been suspecting foobar, as kernel streaming shuts down everything while it operates. I've been very careful to shut down foobar before launching MPC (or any other player). I guess I could switch to something other than kernel streaming, but it uses much less cpu than directsound or waveout.
