I got a wrong AR with AutoGK. The stream info file from DVD Decrypter shows strange values for resolution:

0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / Deutsch / LBA: 73 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0x81 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 74 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0x82 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 75 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 352x480 (NTSC) / 4:3 / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.287 / Delay: 0ms

AutoGK produces a resolution of 448 x 416. See the logs:

So is it the fault of AutoGK or just badly mastered DVD ?

0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 352x480 (NTSC) / 4:3 / LBA: 1
thats an unusual DVD mastered in half/D1 res. most dvd are 720x576

Well, the info generated by DVD Decrypter must be wrong -- the movie is definitely 4:3. I doubt the values of the resolution as well, cause it shows normal size in a player. Guess it is a bug of DVD Decrypter and will report it over there...

jggimi

It's not necessarily a bug. DVDs are stored anamorphically, regardless of DAR 4:3 or DAR 16:9. And Full D1 is only one of many resolution options for the DVD standard. (I don't burn DVDs, so I'm not up to speed on the other possible resolutions, but your resolution as reported may be unusual but perfectly legit according to the standard.)

Ok, I learned this now, also from the thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70754) I created in the Decryptring forum. So indeed, AutoGK must take care and check which is width/height because at the moment I think it just takes it for granted that the first is width.

352x480 is a valid Dvd res .. just unusual to see..I've never seen one authored like that b4..the listing states its 4:3.. autogk is doing something I would consider wrong.. its upscaling the 352 to 448.. but thats probably coz its confused by having a non-std source.. you sure this is a completely legit Dvd? Not a home-brew?;)

Yes, the movie is unintentionally hilarious :D but nevertheless a retail DVD, no bootleg.

Actually AutoGK doesn't look at resolution AR at all. It just deals with PAL/NTSC built-in AR for full screen DVDs plus anamorphic info. So that information from stream info is completely ignored...
I wanna see the screenshot from DVD2AVI to understand what's the source look like there.

me too, moreover it's PAL with FF turned on :)

Ogig
19th February 2004, 16:11
Yes, I see that. But what can be done to get AutoGK to produce the same AR  The change from 1.22:1 to 1.07:1 (Xvid file) is too big for rounding error and the proportions don't look right, though I've seen worse.

len0x
19th February 2004, 16:39
change NTSC to PAL for a start in stream info file...

Ogig
19th February 2004, 19:01
That helped, now I get an output resolution of 480 x 368 which is 1.30. It is not 1.22, but closer. :p

len0x
19th February 2004, 19:12
it's as good as it can get. 1.22 will never be achieved unless there are some blacks bars left and right. Does it look distorted to you in 1.3 AR ?

P.S. and of course it's badly mastered if it says NTSC on DVD when in fact its PAL :)

Ogig

It is perfectly ok now. Thanks for your help and damn those badly mastered DVDs!
