Just wondering if i use wide search for XviD 1.0 RC1 for pass 1 (or any version for that matter) will it make any difference to the quality or is it just a waste of time. Can somebody answer this who has actually encoded and knows the answer. Have used the wide search but would like to if i can save encoding time that's all, thanks!

There are literally a metric hojillion threads talking about the various VHQ and motion search modes. You might try finding them first, before asking.

Heck, they even give PSNR values and such for the various modes. What more can you ask for?

God, who rattled your cage.

P.S and what more can i ask for, maybe a little more politeness, familiar with that word are you.

He's also familiar with #1a in the forum rules: Search before asking your question. If it's pretty basic like yours is, odds are it has been answered more than once.

As he said, there are many threads dealing with VHQ. To save you time, check out the one titled "advantages of Trellis RD?" in the XviD forum. It contains a pretty thorough analysis of the effect of the various VHQ levels combined with a wide variety of settings.

I am familiar with many words. I'm also familiar with the "?" key, for which you seem to lack understanding of concerning its use.

And frankly, I considered my first post quite polite, in light of your rule infraction. Of course, I'm not a mod, so all I could do was remind you of the little search link at the top of Every Screen In The Forum.

S'all.

Well I just did a search on both the words "Wide Search" and "VHQ" and both brought up almst 270 combined topics. And the topic that nazgul referred to came up as 18th listed topic under VHQ search, so next time you might try searching a little bit harder. :)

I'm no mod, but please all calm down, especially when there are no reason to be upset. The question asked in the first place was if VHQ4 was useful in the first pass, and first pass only.

Until recently, if you wanted to use VHQ 4, you had to do it in both passes. Now, it's only useful in second, since, AFAIK, it's been disabled in first pass ( at least, speed is the same for me ).

So, zx50, you don't even have to care about this setting in the first pass. But you should be careful with the tone you use.

[snort] Arrogance?

I've never heard "respecting and following the rules" rendered as "arrogance."

I mean, if you feel the responses you've gotten from me and others have been harsh, I wish you would please understand that lots of people take this place seriously and it's mildly offensive for someone to ignore the precepts of the environment. You are asked to follow these rules. I don't understand what is so terrible about it.

But that is the Internet as meritocracy for you. Maybe when you've been here for 2 years, are and mod, and maybe written your own well-used FAQ, or piece of software, You'll understand how we feel.

But that's enough from me. I don't want to get caught up in a long flame thread and be accused of missing my own point.

Ok, this thread leads into nothing. Well, not correct - someone has a 4 weeks vacation now and may rethink if it's correct to feel p*ssed off if someone reminds him of the rules.
This is a typical example of a user just wanting a fast answer - we don't want that here, and reminding him was correct. His reaction though ("who rattled your cage?") is insulting at least.
I know, another user who hates me now, but heck - I just have so-and-so-many nerves to waste. And I seriously prefer users with proper reputation/behaviour for that instead of some jerks coming here and just ask their stuff right away and afterwards never show up again (well, sometimes they do for repeating the procedure).

zx50: see, we can post like childs, too.
