View Full Version : MP3 Capture crashes VirtualDubMod

I have installed the Gordian Knot 0.28.7.2 package and this works well including MP3 encoding.

If I try to capture a video with VirtualDubMod and set Audio Compression to MP3, VirtualDub crashes.
(Running only one copy so this is not related to my last question :)

This happens with different Video Codecs but other Audio Codecs work.

The same thing happens if I try Winfast PVR to capture.

All the MP3 options show up in the selection window.

All help is appreciated. Thanks KE.

Update: Have found out that LameACM causes the problem.
If I uninstall it, VitualDub no longer crashes.
So I need to find out how to uninstall the other MP3 codec that clashes with LameACM but I understand this not a VirtualDub problem.
Thanks.

You need to configure the lame ACM:

Control Panel
Applet: Sounds and Audio Devices
Tag: Hardware
Scroll option: Audio Codecs
Button: properties
Tag: properties
Select Lame ACM MP3 codec
button: settings

Disable "Smart Encode" and "Average BitRate". This way it will work CBR with the bitrate you select.

Also, it could be advisable to capture audio without compression, and compress afterwards.

Thanks Juan

My LameACM did not have the options you described so I downloaded version 3.95.1 (OK?) then I could follow your instructions.

VitualDub no longer crashes.

(Even with the default settings of the new LameACM it does not crash)
But now I get:

Error 420 Out of Memory for wave buffers.

The reason I am playing around with this: I’d like to just record some TV Movies to watch and delete without filling up my HD.

My Processor is a 1.1 Ghz Celeron so whatever I do pushes it to the limit.
XviD Beta 3 with Turbo and PCM Audio so far worked the best. (About 80% CPU usage.) So any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks KE

yes, that's the latest stable release.

How much RAM do you have?
Are you using Vdub default performance options settings?, those should work fine.

>The reason I am playing around with this: I’d like to just record >some TV Movies to watch and delete without filling up my HD.
For that purpose I use the software included with my cpture card, using the scheduling options(video: mpeg2@2-8mbps; audio mp2 224kbps).

Yes that works OK but uses a lot HD space even at 352x288

256 Meg

Yes

OK here is what is going on:

For both VDub and WinFast:

With LameACM disabled I can capture MP3 up to 56kb/s.
With LameACM enabled all options show up under MP3 but don’t work.
In VDub I get Error 420 as above and in WinFast it looks like it’s working but there is no sound when playing back the file.

With the original Frauenhofer MP3 disabled and LameACM enabled all options show up in VDub as Lame (Not just MP3 as above) but it still does not work.

So LameACM does not work on its own or with the original Frauenhofer enabled.

However: Even with 56kb/s MP3 there are a lot of dropped frames so even if I get Lame working it’s not going to help. But I’d still like to understand what’s going on.

Thanks for your help. I am going to read up some more on capturing in general.

Do you by any chance have a Creative live/audigy sound card? They include with their drivers/software their own mp3 ACM codec: "ctmp3" I not only disable it but I also change its priority so that if enabled, it would be used as the last resource.

Could there be any other mp3 acm codecs on your system? You could try disabling them and/or lowering their priority.

No

There are "lame_enc.dll" in GordianKnot and ExactAudioCopy.
I don't really know how this works but they don't seem to be installed.
In "Audio Codecs" I only have Frauenhofer and/or LameACM as discussed above.

Installing and uninstalling LameACM: sometimes it shows up as Lame and sometimes as MP3. Sometimes as 2 separate codecs:
MP3 up to 56K and Lame with all other options.
But Lame never works. Not on its own and not with Frauenhofer.

Frauenhofer on its own works OK up to 56K.

I have tried both VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod. They both do the same.

I have an other (unrelated?) problem:
The moment I plug in the TV2000 card MediaPlayer 9 stops playing sound and says an other device is using the soundcard.
(Even with WinFast uninstalled and the Drivers disabled)
There are no conflicts in System Properties.
PowerDVD plays sound happyly.

The one thing that works very well (1.1GHz CPU) both in VDub and WinFast PVR:

XviD Beta3, 1000 kbps, 5-Very High, 1-Mode Decision, Turbo, 352x288 and PCM Sound, Radio Quality.

This produces the best result as simple Video Recorder.
(Not talking about creating a master piece for posterity)

Comments welcome. Thanks, KE.

Uninstalled and deleted everything related to Lame and reinstalled.

Now there is no more conflict between Frauenhofer and Lame.
All compression options show up as expected.

Trying to capture to MP3 in VDub still gives me the Error 420 as before but I don’t need to this now that I can compress the sound after capture if I want to keep the video.

(Media Player still does not play sound if the TV2000 card is installed but this is an other problem.)

Thanks for all your help. KE.
