View Full Version : Decoding old "stable" version (2002) file with current version?

I have a really good fan film that I downloaded in XviD, however it was created by the old "stable" beta (the one dated April 4, 2002) and when I try to play it back with the latest builds I get wierd video errors (mostly at the bottom of the frame). It comes with the old "stable" version, however I want to re-encode this with the latest XviD release (to see what kind of quality I get when I cram 22 minutes of video into 64 megs). Is there any way I can do this without decoding the file to HuffYUV using the old version (I don't want to waste time and HD space).

reencoding a source from mpeg-4 to mpeg-4 should always be done to a lossless source and have atleast minor cleaning done to it prior to recompression, as all you will do is amplify compression noise.

I'm going to be resizing from 800x600 to 320x240 so I don't think that any "cleaning" would really make a difference.

Resolutions different than mod16 were broken in old alpha builds.

Btw: re-encoding MPEG-4 to MPEG-4 is a major 'ouch', but with downsizing to such a low resolution you might not notice the lower quality anyway. Best is then to decode the first clip to a lossless format like huffyuv and then re-encode that clip to the new Xvid.
Taking this intermediate step also allows you to do some extra noise filtering.

You can copy old version of xvid.ax (divx decoder) from winnt\system32 to any directory than uninstal xvid, than instal new Xvid and than rewrite new decoder by old version - you have old decoder and new encoder(xvid.dll same location) without huffman
you can also copy ax and dll files of new and old files and switched them without many intalling and unistalling
