View Full Version : Strange artifacts decoding divx5 content

Hi,
I'm using XVID 1.0 RC2 (Koepi's build) to decode a divx video, but I get some strange artifacts. The image is slightly distorted and some parts of her skin are green:

All post-processing is disabled. What could be the problem? ffdshow plays back the same file correctly.
EDIT: I'm editing the post to include the correct decode by ffdshow (official alpha build from 2003-05-23)

Thanks a lot.
Best regards.

Do you know if the Divx clip uses QPEL?

Really a DivX codec should be used to view DivX content. I'm not saying that this is why this video looks like this, just that thing's like this might happen. I tried to view an XviD video without XviD installed and the screen was blank, so without DivX installed well....have any other DivX video's played fine with the XviD codec?

It's okay i've just read in another section that encodes with b-frames are decodable with DivX content.

Hi,
zx50: I've tried to play a handful of divx videos, and while some of them show the problem, others play just fine.
Stereodude: Sorry, I don't know. Is there any tool I could use to check if QPEL has been used?
Regards.

But the thing is they shouldn't. The codecs are intended to comply with the same standard, in theory divx as a codec shouldn't even be distinguishable from xvid (on the decoder side, I mean). Thanks to the influence of avi, however, an mpeg 4 utopia is a long way off and we're going to continue seeing things like this :|
I hope the devs don't take offense at that, rather I'm blaming the general situation M$ landed us in. The devs have been doing a great job at setting things straight.

I have to admit I don't have a single DX50 encoding on my disk. I have some AVIs with DX50 fourcc and they are all xvid :)
Generally I added DX50 support because I find it useful (for me). It's disabled by default for a reason - I'm sure you don't mind it's there if it's disabled.
Anyone could send me a small clip that shows these problems? I'm interested why this happens.

during blackback you will see if the video uses qpel, gmc aso...

Hi,
Yes, I've installed ffdshow20031128 build from athos and it says the frame type is "GMC QPEL". By the way, with this build I'm getting a constant 100% CPU usage whereas the build from 20030523 only used 70% of my CPU (a lowly Celeron at 633 MHz).
EDIT: I'm editing to mention that the 100% CPU usage only happens when the OSD display is activated. If I turn the OSD off, then the CPU usage goes back to the normal 70%.
Cheers.

I bumped into a related problem. I tried to play a divx5.1.1 mp4 using the rc2 decoder and I got garbage. The clip used b-frames but no gmc/qpel. The clip plays fine with the nero and the 3ivx decoders.

@Leolo: It seems to me a mod16 issue. In that case only the divx's own decoder was working to me, with the other decoders i've experienced similar things. You should check the resolution.

(Sorry the flood, but I couldn't help it ;))
PS.: I haven't had any problems decoding DivX with XviD Decoder until now. Maybe an old version?
