Unable to create IFO files for a set of VOB's

Hello everybody,

I would like to start by sucking up a bit :).
This site is great and an excellent source of information. Furthermore, this is the only forum that I know of that has very strict rules and guidelines, which only makes me take it more seriously.

And here's the "however" - I was unsuccessful at generating IFO's for my VOB's using IFOEdit 0.96, in spite of following a couple of guides that I found links to.
I tried to Create IFO's for my original VOB's, for just the first one, I tried to join them and then create IFO's for the resulting VOB's, to no avail.

After IFOEdit scans through them, I always get "Could not find any VOB unit in VOB file(s)".
Each VOB plays in Media Player Classic, they load in VOBEdit and I can see the contents.
They were ripped using DVD::RIP (linux), if that has any bearing.

In following the guides, I did rename the files as required by IFOEdit, as VTS_01_00x.VOB for joining and as VTS_01_x.VOB for Creating IFO's, where x is 1 to 6 in my case.

If you were using IfoEdit while the files were named VTS_01_00x.VOB, then it wouldn't work, since it's out of filename specs. Hence, you get the "Could not find any VOB unit in VOB file(s)" warning message. It can't detect files it can recognize. Only VobEdit recognizes those *00x.VOB filenames. As far as software players are concerned, they can play the files because of the VOB extension.

Again, you need to use VobEdit for joining the files. When you have joined me, then can you use IfoEdit to create new IFOs. Here's the VobEdit guide (http://users.pandora.be/rudy.stremersch/joinclip.html) for you.

There are many methods on joining different VOBs. Have you tried re-authoring with DVD Shrink?

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry for not making myself clear. I used VOBEdit to join them as per the guide, and then loaded the resulting VOB's in IFOEdit, trying to obtain the IFO's.
This is the step that failed every time, after IFOEdit finished scanning all VOB's. ("Could not find any VOB unit in VOB file(s)").

It didn't work with my original set of VOB's, just the first one or after I re-created (joined) the VOB's with VOBEdit (this is when I used the 00x in the file names).

I must say that the join process worked (even though I seem to have gotten a copy of my original VOB's - judging by their sizes - which I expected). I have 6 VOB's for a total of 5.25 GB.

What bothers me is that no-one on this forum seems to have trouble geting the IFO's out of a set of VOB's but me. :(

You said you have this now after joining and renaming.

VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB
VTS_01_6.VOB

You then should start IfoEdit, click on Create IFOs, browse to your VTS_01_1.VOB.

Select same as source.

Now, at this point, after clicking on OK, you get the error?

Actually, no.
After I click OK, IFOEdit starts scanning all the VOB's, which takes a while. At the end, after the scan, that's when I get the error message.

Those are my files and I did check the box. The guide is pretty specific about that.

Honestly, I'm still using 0.95 more since it works for me and I'm used to it. Have you tried creating IFOs with 0.95?

Not yet. I'll try both. It's not like I have to uninstall, reboot a couple of times and then if it doesn't work, start over. Just unzip and double click.

I downloaded both, but I have this bad habit of downloading the latest versions of everything (Linux fan). :)

By the way, thanks to all that take the time to write great programs like xxxEdit and the rest. I wish I could, but Visual Basic isn't good at stuff like that. Ant that's where my programming 'expertise' ends. Too bad there aren't any ZX Spectrums doing video capture... I used to be pretty good at Z80 code.

Try creating IFOs on just your original VTS_01_1.VOB. Does that work?

I will test another VOB, from a different movie, see if that works.

Hello again,

I tried another set of VOB's and I got my IFO files using IFOEdit.
However, these files were VTS_01_x.VOB from the beginning.

The ones I tried with were initially VTS_02_x.VOB and I renamed them to _01_x. Could that be the problem? I would think not, otherwise the instructions would mention it.

The bottom line is that I still can't get IFO's for my original set of VOB's.

Here is what I tried:
- IFOEdit to obtain IFO files
- IFOEdit to join VOB's and then get IFO's
- VOBEdit to demux the VOB's (only the first m2v file plays, all other don't, all ac3 files do play)

Any ideas what else I could try?

Additional info:

I tried to open the VOB's that I can't get IFO's for with VOBEdit.
to my surprise, only the first one has a tree-like structure, all others only show the top entry that can't be expanded.

What does that mean? I would assume it's corrupt, but the VOB plays well in Media Player Classic.

Hi,
I have the exact same problem with a couple of back ups, that I made using Smartripper, and I am quite sure that I used the same settings each time, and I only ripped the main movie and one audio track.

When I try to create ifo’s, one of them is working just fine, but the others isn’t.
("Could not find any VOB unit in VOB file(s)").
I opened the vob’s in vobedit, and the only difference that I can see, is that the one’s that I am unable to create ifo’s for, is missing the navigation pack.
Could this be why we are unable to create ifo’s? (The missing navigation pack.), and if it is so, what can we do about it.
