Grid computing for encoding?

Would it be possible to modify video encoding apps to take advantage of this? I have no idea, just a thought though...

In terms of MPEG4 encoding it would not help much. Especially where bidirectionally predicted frames are concerned. The only way this would be even remotely feesable would be to use a closed GOP like MPEG1 and MPEG2. Which would reduce the flexibility and efficiency of MPEG4. Though technically this should be possible.
