View Full Version : Replacing streams (like menu image, subtitle track, etc.)

My goal is to take a DVD that doesn't have subtitles in my language (Hebrew, and there are many such DVDs), and to add Hebrew subtitles to it. The question - is there a way to do it using this thread's tools without a full reauthoring process.

Currently, I'm demuxing the main movie (using Vobedit), demuxing the subtitles into multiple BMPs (subrip), then I replace one set of BMPs with subtitles for Hebrew, and then I use DVDMaestro to author the whole thing. I just have to use IfoUpdate to put back the original menus and extras into the VIDEO_TS. It's too complicated (and the menu doesn't show a Hebrew subtitles option - I usually have to select French or Spanish (or use the remove, of course), to get the Hebrew subtitles.

Is there a way to demux everything, replace only one the subtitle track assets, and mux everything back? Is this a good thread to ask this question? If everything is demuxed, maybe I would be able to replace the menu video (proabaly a still frame) to show Hebrew (I'll do the artwork, I don't mind).

Thanks,
Barak

It kinda depends on the structure I guess. If you have a dvd on which you can use RA I would do the following:

Demux everything with dif4u. Replace one of the existing demuxed streams you don't want with you own subs. Create a RA script and import and compile this.

You could also have Ra create the script, then manually add subs and compile.

Not talking about the menu here. Maybe menuedit can be helpful, but I'm not sure about that.

hi krajicekp,
you might want to take a look at a few of the guides and familiarise yourself with the tools and the processes they automate for you.
here is an excellent guide to get you started:
Full DVD Backup guide (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ra-guide.htm)
sorry if you already know the basics but by your post i would have to assume that you did not understand influenzas post, which (and no offence to anyone) involves rather basic concepts.
as for the script, you can always include the 'new' subs in the subs folder that DIF4U demuxes for you, in place of an existing stream, that you are replacing, and rename to follow DIF4Us naming scheme. Then point RA to your demux directory and generate script. - although i personally would prefer the manual approach that influenza has also suggested.
good luck

I've read these guides. I've done full backups before, but have the following issues:
1. I don't have Scenarist. I'm using MaestroSBT. Do you think I should invest in learning Scenarist?
2. It takes too long (a couple of hours per DVD title) to add Hebrew subtitles. Often, it's "cheaper" to wait 6 months for the region 2 version with the Hebrew subtitles. I was hoping there's a method that would streamline the work. It looks like the full backup using Scenarist will not be faster.
Thanks.

sorry brakori, i should have been more obvious in my post that i was directing my comments at krajicekp and not your original thread.
i have never tried to alter subtitle streams however your method seems reasonably 'streamlined' as is. i dont believe there is currently a one-click wonder tool avaliable but if it was possible, i would assume it would have been discussed in the subtitles forum.
good luck

Ooops,

Jel, you've been quite obvious, I didn't pay attention. Thanks.
