Cpu usage of 3ivx DS filters decoding (HE-)AAC files

Hi, there!

I have been esperimenting with some Nero's HE-AAC for a few days. I have benn encoding music files in the Nero-Media-Player application into the mp4 container. For I don't know how to play the iso-???? aac files. In order to play the files with CoreMPlayer, I have installed the 3ivx directshow filters, which BTW seem to produce far higher sound quality when compared to NeroMP So far everything works fine the is only ...

... one oddity
The cpu consumption seems a bit high to me. During playback my Athlon 1500+ is at about 20%. But what's really odd is the fact that at the start of every song it goes up to 100% for at least 1 second. This leads me to ...

Is it normal for the 3ivx DS-filters to consume 100% cpu at the start of every HE-AAc encoded mp4 file, and, if not, what could be the reason?

What about CoreAAC? Had no problem so far with it.

Decoding of he-aac files needs WAY more CPU power, but 20% on a 1500+ seems really a bit too high. Try playing with WinAmp 5 + in_mp4 (from rarewares).

I remember having problems with high CPU usage when using the 3ivX AAC decoder. Unfortunately I can't test anymore because it expired. :p CoreAAC on the other hand works very nice :) Give it a try...

Thanks for the hints. Now, I have uninstalled the 3ivx filters an have put the coreaac filters and the aacparser on my system. however, the neither graphedit nor TCMP can render the mp4 or the extracted (mp4ui) aac file. What am i missing, guys?

you can also use the 3ivx mp4 splitter together with coreaac!

I tested CoreAAC vs 3ivx AAC decoder speed some time ago. At least at that time 3ivx decoder used especially with aac-he way more processing power than CoreAAC. Though I haven't tested if they did some optimization in the recent release, but maybe they would have said so..

About the sound quality; I don't think there should be much difference between FAAD2 based decoders (CoreAAC, NeroMP etc.) and 3ivx aac decoder. Difference may appear from other things like EQ settings etc.

But isn't the 3ivX decoder based on FAAD2 as well? Or is only that the 3ivX encoder is based on FAAC?

The 3ivx audio decoder is not based on FAAD2 and the current 3ivx audio encoder is based on FAAC.

I converted wav file to mp4 using nero's HE-aac codec, Am able to play those file fine in nero media player, but the same i cant play in
MPC, i get error saying the codec is missing, tho i hv installed coreaac ds filter...

what am i missing ??? any help

1. nero media player does not use the directshow subsystem or it installs filters which cannot be used by other applications

2. AFIK you need the aac-parser and the aac-decoder

3. the two filters do not handle .mp4 files, so that you will have to tick the 'export iso-xxxxxx aac file' optin in the he-aac encoder config dialog

Strange, when trying to connect the filters (3ivx splitter + CoreAac decoder) in graphedit, it tells me that they cannot agree.
