Have been working out how to rip, compress and burn dvd's for a few weeks now and am pretty much there and am getting exact duplicates however.... towards the end of films or about an hour and a half through picture starts freezing and jumping. Couldn't see any answers in the FAQ's and was wondering if anyone could help..Cheers. ;)

hi and welcome to the forum
seems to me like a trouble with your media/burner combination!
first check on www.dvdrhelp.com if your media is compatible with your burner, if so try burning at a lower speed - preferably 1x - to reduce burning errors.

Thanks for getting back to me...will go to this site and check compatability. I have nero 5.5 and updated my drivers so that it was compatible with a sony 510a dvd burner, am also working with smart ripper and dvd2one software and am not aware of any problems but maybe you are??? I noticed a similar problem posted a few weeks ago and it was suggested that the discs were at fault?... I know you're not supposed to promote individual products but if i was to go and buy some more discs is there any places to avoid or specific discs to go for (am not too sure what i am looking for and don't want to get ripped off by some high street retailer for expensive discs that don't help solve my problem)...Thanks

Also try a different brand disc, prefferably one that has prove itself for durability and creditability. I use Ritek disk and afaik a great number of this community members are.
The problem u r describing comes with disks that has bad recording dye.

red-adair, I originally used your copying method and changed to Shrink because I thought it might have been that causing the problems.
(I would recomend Shrink 3.1, you have full control over the sound and compression levels + its FREE, if you have Nero use ImgTool to copy to DVD)
I haven't tried -R and LIGHTNING UK seems to think it may be the dye type, I currently use purple, I'm not sure what other colours are available and open to recomendations.

Silko: the colour of the dye doesn't matter as much as the manufacturer. purple die can be excellent but also garbage... :)

Crap media cause the exact problems that you are having. The outside edge of the disc has thinner dye or uneven dye, combined with the fact that the laser is travelling past the surface of the disc faster means that the last bit of the film is more prone to errors.
I use Grade A Ritek GO4s and have never had a problem.
I think they represent a good balance between quality and price

thanks for your advice, will try some ritek and afaik discs to see if this is where the problem is....have just noticed that the freezing is also happening to discs that I have burnt to from my dv camcorder which makes me think it has nothing to do with the software I have been using for ripping.compressing...however I get an exact copy without freezing if I copy a dvd that was allready a copy if you know what I mean.

The fact that copies of copies work is probably a coincidence.
You'll get the odd disc that's OK and also if the film doesn't fill the disc to the edge then crap media are usually OK as well.

Had a look here for the media www.valuemedia.co.uk
Ritek DVD-R 4.7Gb GP 4 speed, Orange (Overprint) top (Ritek GO4 dye), 25 pack in cake box £20.56 + p&p
There actually cheaper than my last order.
I have also found other sites that use the (Ritek GO4 dye) but by a different manufacturer.

Mallum,
So a way around this to make good of crap media is to overcompress movies, or remove extras not required, this should make the final burn come inside the 'dodgy' edge.
Its all starting to make sense now.
So next time I use shrink, I'll probably come inside the 4gb marker rather than going full out.

Cheers for your help will go ang get some decent discs from where you suggested... also maulum one disc that I over compressed was lion king (was for my daughter-honest!). I took it down to 3000mb and the jumping only started after the film had ended.

Yep
that will work with all but the worst media but it's better (IMO) to get good media in the first place.
If you buy some decent ones then you could use the crap for films that come in under 4Gb anyway (with extras removed)
