View Full Version : Need help converting DVD to AVI

I've read all the DVD2AVI, DVD2DivX guides and I know how to make'em, but I have a question:
When I'm working on the conversion (with GordianKnot) all the guides said I should keep Bits*Pixels between 0,20 and 0,25 to have a good quality, or never keep under 0,17, so, I want a 2 hour movie to fit a 700MB CD but with good quality, but I can't. If I resize the Bits*Pixels value is always between 0,13 and 0,15. What am I doing wrong, or should I forget these values (except when it's 0,01 or 0,05)? So, how do you guys do to get a 2h movie in 700MB with at least 656x480 (NTSC 4:3) (this is an example)?
Thanks in advance

I downloaded 5 movies, all had around 700MB and 1h30min to 2h, good quality (one was excellent) and 4 of them had big resolutions, except 1, which was around 500x300.
I don't know, but that movies seemed pretty good to me.

in short, you can't not with acceptable quality. of course it depends on the source, but with this resolution and then in the 4:3 you have little chance of getting anything watchable. i'd recommend you either reduce your resolution, or what would be even better, simply go for 2 CDs!

Hi-

Since you're using GKnot, run a compression test to see if you can fit that movie with that resolution onto 1 CD with decent quality (and as killingspree says, probably not). That bits/pixel stuff is just a (not very reliable) guide. Different movies compress differently, but you'll never know unless you first run the test.

when I tried to run compressibility test, it f*ed my movie (i dont know best word than this to describe what happened). I tried last night to convert the 1st 5 chapters of Memento with bitrate around 650K/s and with 656x480 resolution. Then with the same resolution but higher bitrate, enough to the value goes to between 0,20 and 0,22, the file had almost double size and little difference, but it didn't have the same quality as the movies I have downloaded, I'll be trying, who knows with some help, I'll make it good.

Thx
